This is a sulfur shelf, chicken of the woods, mushroom that I discovered growing on my cherry chopping block last week.

ALWAYS be careful and do your research before foraging for mushrooms!

I bagged 5 pounds for the freezer and made an appetizer for tonight.

Please, always forage responsibly.

Dont know if this is true but I once heard that any mushroom that grows on trees/rotten wood is safe to eat. Can anyone verify this?

So... are you still with us and how did it taste?
Josh

I am just fine. These actually have a taste and consistency similar to chicken. Hence the name.

I'm gonna try to chicken fry some of these this week and see how it turns out. :)

Nice pictures. that will help me in the future. I have not found any chickens yet. I seen some Oysters that I couldnt reach. I was metal detecting in the woods yesterday and found some Coral tooth and some giant Puffballs but I had no way to carry them back.

I wonder if they grow so well cause your dog or some other dog pee on them every day .... Well just a thought lol..
Fry them in olive oil with garlic some green onion, Right before they are done put a thin sliced tomato on top with lots of dill. When the tomato is soft its ready to eat.
would go great as breakfast on the weekend with some eggs on the side. Now if you really want to make a huge difference. instead of olive oil use chicken fat and the flavor would be mind blowing... Bon Appetite..

I have harvested those so large that I could not carry the entire mushroom back to my truck in one trip.
I've had one mushroom fill both sides of a double sink.
I've covered the entire bed of a pick-up truck and left more in the woods because there were too many to clean.
If you can find a good hardwood patch of timber in the mid-west, start watching about the end of August.
I've also harvested fresh ones with snow on them.
Just too good to pass up.

Ok I went out to a pond by my house and decided to go around where people never go . And as I walk through the woods I see this thing on a tree . I saw it and said I'm going to post a picture on the forum to see if it's edible . And I came across this post. What is it and should I go back for it so I can try a wild mushroom .
