childhood "survival" knife

Mine was a G-96 copy of a Buck 110. Still have it in a box. I used that knife everywhere for everything. My fixed blade ( still have that too) is a Solingen faux-bone handled hunter in leather sheath. I actually had pretty good sharpening skills back in the 70's because I came across it a while ago and the edge was pretty decent. Those two knives where all I pretty much used for over 35 years. Things all changed when I discovered what was really out there in the knife world and I got a little more confident to spend more money on knives and heck , I've sure done that a lot !
:)

Same here. Lost it within a few months and was heart broken. Also had one of those survival knives up above that was in the back of the boys life catalog

Great Thread! When I was about 6 or 7, I had a Swiss Army Soldier that my dad brought back for me from a trip to Germany. Awesome little knife - was always with me in the woods. Heck, it was with me at all times - before we even had the term "EDC." I eventually lost it and upgraded to a swiss army knife with a saw and file - don't remember the model. With that I was able to do ANYTHING. Actually, all my friends had some sort of pocket knife too - SAKS, Boy scout knifes, traditional slip joints.. with those me and my friends would build traps in the woods just for fun -- nothing to actually kill or trap an animal-- Carve spears, make forts, sling shots, or just whittling.

None of our knives were high-end, none locked, and were all 2 hand openers! Imagine that!!!

I think that's why to this day, all I usually need with me in the woods is a small multitool (leatherman kf4) and a small fixed blade.

Try this again....

My first knife was a puuko that I earned by filleting a fish around age 7. I lost it gopher hunting one day when I suspect some dumb cows tried to eat the "grain" that was in the bucket we put our knives and other supplies in while taking a little trip to the dug out. When we returned the bucket was tossed, and only a couple of supplies remained. I looked for weeks in the short grass to no avail. Good thing I am in the process of remaking it!

After that my Grandpa bought a box of these, and one did not move from my side unless I was going to school or the city:

Then I had to go and shoplift the first copy of TK magazine and the rest was history....

Got my first knife when I was 5. It was a Vic Small Tinker. Still have it to this day more than more than 20 years later.

I asked my dad if I could have a survival knife. He then asked my why I needed a big old "Rambo" knife. I told him no not a Rambo knife a survival knife you know like the kind that has all kinds of tools on it so you can survive. I guess even at a young age I understood function over form. Now if only I was that smart in all of my childhood decisions.

I had a three piece Imperial set. It consisted of fixed blade , a scout knife and an hatchet. The two knives fit in the same sheath. I lost the Scout knife but have found another one.Still have the original fixed blade and hatchet. I dont have a picture as of now will get one soon. The set is about 45 years old.

Mine is the one in the bottom of my pocket dump picture:

I have been carrying that knife since I received my Totin' Chip from the BSA when I was 7. I have lost it and found it a hundred times in the past 21 years, but I still have it. I hope to carry it to my grave.

This is a great thread, we're like a bunch of overgrown 10 year olds rembering how and why knives are still apart of our every day lives. I love the trades that our little group would do with knives, fishing gear, Playboys and motorcycle parts.

If I recall, it was an old Pakistan clone of the Buck 110. I lost it many years ago, and have a real Buck 110 now.

When I was ten or eleven my Granddad gave me a Case 3318 yellow handled stockman. Two or three years later I traded my way into a second hand finger-grooved Buck 110.
I got by just fine with those two knives for years. Sometimes I look at all the knives that I have now and just shake my head and laugh.:D

I had one of those for a few minutes too. For about as long as it took my mom to figure out I traded my super nintendo for it. Opps

I think I still have mine - I saw it in a box a couple of years ago! My mother gave me the black one and the camouflage one for Christmas one year. The last time I laid eyes on them, the fluid was pretty much gone from the compass...

I had a K.J Eriksson when I was a kid. I never liked it, so I didn`t use it much. Then my dad gave me a Victorinox Standart. After that the world opened for me. It was the coolest knife of the neighbourhood. I still have it and will always treasure it. Have had it for almost 20 years now.

I still have my childhood outdoor set of three. I promised pics, here they are. The scout knife is lost, but I replaced it recently with one just like it.The replacement says Kampking, I dont think the original did. One sheath totes the two knives.

So tell us all about your childhood "survival" knife and all the stuff it did for you before u found out it just wasn't good enough.

I still have and use mine all the time and it's still plenty good for me. :)

Buck 105 Pathfinder. My first real fixed blade knife at age 13 in 1974.

I've got that "Rambo" knife right now in my basement. I bought it when I must have been about 10 or so, somewhere between First Blood and Rambo 2, haha! They were very popular, cost about 10 bucks IIRC. Anyhow, my first knife was a Barlow around the age of 7. I lost that and had a slew of Buck clones that are all gone now as well. But my first quality FB was given to me by my grandmother after my grandfather had progressed too far with Alzheimers to trust him with a 6" sticker in his bedroom! Sorry for the link but I have never been successful posting pics:

I actually carried this knife on camping trips in my teens and twenties, i'd never take it out of the house now that i'm older and wiser, yeah right!

Good Gawd, I had it too! EXACTLY the same one, too! We ran around the woods w my BSA troop with a bunch of these on our belts like we were in 'nam for months. Horrible blades though. All the real cutting was still dne by my SAK. I soooo wish I had that knife, just for the memories.

For me it was my shrade old timer 'bearhead.' My dad took me to to the store after weeks of saving up my chores allowance to get it. I remember the 3" handle fit my hand perfectly when I was 6 or 7 years old. I've been obsessed with knives ever since.

My first experience with a blade was camping when I wanted to cut down a tree but was told I was to little. The only thing they would let me play with was an old WWII issue GI mini shovel. It took an hour or two, but when I brought the tree back for fire wood they finally gave me a 2 blade Barlow to keep. I think I was about 6 or so. Like all of you, I still wish I had that one. Joe

im still 13 now so my first knife wasnt that long ago, it was some type of swiss army knife... but my favourite knife i have now is my esee 5 pure awesomeness

Mine was a Kabar stockman, but on special occasions, my father would let me carry his Maartiini Puukko. I felt like a special person with that Puukko.

Mine was a folding "Boy Scout-type" knife with The Lone Ranger's picture and signature on it. Scales are red plastic and it has a laynard loop and leather thong. I later upgraded to the same knife with "pearl" scales. :D
