Did the search...97 threads with the word "China", too little time.
What Mayo Bucks are MIC?
I got a birthday coming up...and am putting my wish list togetherfor the keiki ("kids" kine word).

Either 173 or 179.
Which of the two is "your" favorite?
Which Buck/Mayo would you take if you were to be a "Cast Away"?

Thanks TLC...

I like Hilo better than the Nothshore of Hawai'i for diff reasons.
In this case, I think I will get a Hilo.

Really am liking the 172, but it's as if I am afraid to use it for fear of messing it up. Like those peeps with those $50,000 four wheel drives that never take it off the road.

Maybe I'm wasting it. But, that is why I am considering the Hilo...good knife????

I haven't owned a Hilo, but I had a Mantis from the China made line, and it was really nice.

Goose, you are echoing the sentiment of many others here about not wanting to use a certain knife for fear of messing it up. I felt that way for a good long while myself - spent better than a fair share of cash to acquire certain knives, then put them in a drawer "not wanting to mess them up." I readily admit, some knives I bought with no intention of anything except display - others I bought to use, yet put away. Then, one day, a light came on in my head... I'm dealing with Bucks - and Bucks 4-Ever Warranty. That was the day I decided that except for those knives I bought with the intent of display only, if I bought it, I would use it. I carry my 172 (one of the firsts) and my PCKS Custom 110, as well as several others daily... have yet to "hurt" them, but know that if I did "hurt" them in regular use, I could get them taken care of by the good knife Dr's at Buck. I realize there is a big difference between "use" and "abuse" - I use a knife for what it is intended - cutting, and find the right tool to turn a screw, or pry open a paint can, etc.... and have yet to have a Buck Knife fail me.

Hey Gypsy D...
Good points. You are so right...I never thought of it that way.

Was thinking of getting one of the other Mayo Bucks as
I didn't want to "mess up" the 172. Asked if they were off shore or US, as if one or the other was US made, I would get that one. As they are both foreign made, I'd prob get the Hilo.

Thanks to your Yodaism, I will re-think it. Just "ride it like ya stole it".

I do have a Mantis and it is impressive BTW. Just would have the bucks stay here for Buck jobs, if I could.

And the "use" Vs. "abuse" is so true. I just got a fifth version 110 that has the butt of the bolster looking like a hammer. Using those cleaning tips from my forum peeps to bring it back to some level of cleanliness and luster.

Am thinking of sending it in for BG-42, but the blade is pretty decent, so I just may leave it as it and use a more recent beater for a steel upgrade.

Well, that's off thread...so anyway....
Thanks Gypsy...

If you like sucking down Chinese Bucks, you are in luck. They just served up a big heaping spoonful of saturated market fat. Check out newgraham and the knifecenter.

winning combo.

No kidding, those are cool sites. I have to do a "Homer"..."DOH!!!"
Thought the 172 was my first Mayo. Turns out the 198 Mantis was my first.

Both are impressive.

"Hi Bucksong's Chinese American Diner"
"Yeah, delivery please. I'll have a number 198 and number 172 hot and spicy. Hey! If I order a 179, that makes it a Win Ning Combo so I get free egg roll, right?"
"NO! That dine in only."

Always Politically Incorrect...

But it's not much of a Buck any more.

That's funny, my box says "Buck"...my knife says "Buck".....sure looks like a Buck knife to me.

BTW...where did you buy your American made PC?

A difference of standards I guess. I don't collect the "Schrade" knives made in China either.

I don't collect PCs, nor do I have any special attachment to any brand. Your sarcastic question is actually off topic, though it is apparently in your bank of canned remarks for the general subject.

The whole "I hate knives from China" thing is off topics in here, it belongs in the political forum.

And my "canned" remark is perfectly valid. If someone continually whines about chinese made knives, with a chinese made PC, they are a hypocrite and nothing more or less.

You advocate a position that you yourself do not uphold.

Perhaps if all the "Schrade collectors" had spent the hundreds of dollars they spent on those evil communist chinese PC's, on Schrade knives, then perhaps Schrade would still be in business?

Indeed, but I didn't say that. I am talking about "Buck" knives made in china, and wowee here we are in the Buck manufacturer's forum.

You are making this a political issue. I didn't say nothing can be made in China. I could explain why your PC argument is wrong and blunt, but like you said that's for the political forum.

You advocate a position that you yourself do not uphold.
This is called a strawman. You are imagining a position I did not bring up. YOU brought it up as a political issue.

If you don't see the collecting value of a knife actually made by its brand-owner, well hell I don't know what to say.

But if I were to speculate, I think you have a major "pet peeve" about the political issue specific to China, and you are seeing that before you see the more obvious reality.

Now you are just ranting incoherently, and DEFINITELY making it an issue for the political forum. But I guess I am the hypocrite for wanting Buck knives actually made by Buck.

Actually, you informed me my knife "wasn't much of a Buck", and you were wrong. Were the Camillus contract knives not "real" Bucks?

If Buck contracts it and puts it's name on it, it is a Buck product.

No, just tired of seeing all the whining about knives made offshore, in a county that alledgedly adheres to free market capitalism, in a forum that's supposed to be about knives.

In the new issue of Knife World, that arrived this morning there is an excellent article about chinese made knives. I suggest you read it. Buck is simply diversifying in an entirely logical manner, to meet all markets.
Schrade failed to and look how that turned out.

Would you like to see Buck go under also?

Are they somehow misleading you?

Well. All I wanted to know, is that "given a choice" between a 173 or 179, I would obtain the one made in USA. Doing so, not as a "ChiBuck is not a Buck" stand, but to support US workers when I do have a choice.

Put the hornets back in the nest.
Goose.

BTW, my PC was made in Malaysia.
