Howdy Folks,

I have been pondering getting a Kershaw Vapor but the local Walmart only has the Chinese made ones. So I wanted to get some opinions on these knives. Please help me decide if I should get this knife for only $19.99. Quality is a question/concern for me. Thanx,

S.

Do a search on this, it was discussed a couple of months back. But basically the consensus was that they are worth it. The steel being 420 is the biggest concern not the excellent build quality.

And I think that I could honestly say that they are a good knife, with out the need to say “for only $20” also.

I have a Japanese and a Chinese version. Both are good knives but the Japanese has a better lock up and better finish.
Get a vapor and while you're there...buy a Buck 303

Kershaw Vapor
A Ken Onion Design
These Ken Onion designed knives are designed to fit the hand. The skeleton handles make the knife lighter for carrying and easier to clean after a long day of hard use. The stainless steel handles and a Frame-Lock give the knife enough strength and versatility for almost any job. The drop-point blade of AUS-6A at 56-57 Rc. supports a thumb stud for easy opening and closing one handed.

I own two Japanese Vapors and one Chinese VaporII.

The Chinese knife was a trifle less sharp, and maybe a smidgen less nice. But it's the knife that will need to be kicked out of my right front pocket by something MUCH better! It fits my hand as though made to the exact dimensions. It locks up perfectly fine. The blade is centered when closed. And it has a decent closed detent. OH, and about 10 strokes each side on Crock Sticks made it shave a patch off the back of my left paw!

In my opinion RUN to Wallyworld and GRAB a Vapor!!!

While I wish it wasn't made in China, it's still a nice knife. I even think I may like it better than the Camillus EDC, except for the steel and where it's made. Great knife!

Ohhhhh yeah, definately get one.
A frame lock folder with a serviceable steel at that price was unheard of until Kershaw took the gamble and made it happen.
This knife is very much worth the $19.99 price IMO.

Just grabbed one of these last week , to give my Sebenza a break now and then . I use it for cutting open boxes .It is a great little knife , and if I lose it oh well , back to walmart again .
Has anyone handled the Kershaw " Leek " yet ?
Any feedback on how they are ?

Have a KNICE day !!:D

Man dont buy a chinese knife. Its just a cheap POS made with slave labor. Instead of giving your money to a Communist oppressor give it to your fellow country men and buy American.

Frankly, I drift a bit farther to the left than most everyone around here (hey, diversity makes the internet great and America a great country). With that said, I strongly second what MicMurry said. When there's an alternative (and with knives, there are LOADS of alternatives) I won't buy Chinese. :grumpy:

I read previous threads on this and went to a few Walmarts in my area but none had the Japanese made one. I like the design and hope to come across of the Japanese made ones.

If I had my druthers I would never buy Chinese guys.

But if a brand name like Kershaw comes up made there I will swallow my pride and buy.

This knife (VaporII) is EVERYTHING I could ask for, sharp enough (and no problem to return to sharp enough), solid enough (frame lock - need I say more?), and sheeple enough looking - and cost a whopping $25.

I tell ya, I'm a cheap bastid!

Hello,

First I would like to thank everyone who responded to my post. I was pleased to see how many responces I got and also how in-depth they were. Second I wanted to tell you all that I did go to a local Walmart and bought a Kershaw Vapor, but I did not buy the Vapor so I would be lying if I said I did. What happened was that I discovered a box of clearence knives on the counter and in this box, among several Schrades, I found a Japanese made Kershaw Line Action knife model 2415. It was $15.00 and so I bought it. It wasn't bad considering that the original price was $34.83 at Walmart and Sears sells them for $39.99. It has an aluminum handle with polymer inserts and a line lock which will not allow the knife to be swung open. The blade is half serrated and sharp enough to do surgery with. I already cut myself three time and I only had the knife for 24 hours. I wanted a cheap Kershaw knife that was made in japan and I got one. So I am happy. Now can anybody tell me anything about my new knife and its AUS6 steel? :D Here's a pic I borrowed from kershawknives.com

Spill:
My first quality one-handed opening knife was a Kershaw liner action that I bought in 1997. It's a very good knife, took me a while to learn how to open it effortlessly (you have to press in then up to overcome the strong detent). In fact, I have the 2410(?) and the 2415 (3" and 3.5" bladed versions). The drop point shape and the full hollow grind make excellent cuts, and the AUS-6 steel of these blades is actually very good quality. I took the clip off my 3.5" version for easy pocket carry.

hi all, my first post and i like what i've read on this bb so far.since the kershaw vapor is the latest addition to my collection, i thought this would be a good place to reply. mine's the 19.99 chinese version (wal-mart). i like it a lot, but am concerned also about the blade steel. it came out of it's box covered with oil. the excess oil was removed and after a week of carry i noticed a bit of rust? near the opening stud. easily removed with a metal polishing cloth. i lke this knife a lot but it hasn't replaced the gerber 2.5in. red handled lst that's been edc for about 3 years now to open boxes, cut tape etc. the vapor is a bit larger and heavier than needed for these uses i feel. overall i'd recommend it highly though! p.s is that "playboy" joeschmoe2002 from candlepowerforums?

Whoa wait a minute! I agree it's preferable to buy American, but lets get our facts straight! The Kershaw Vapor, like CRKT knives, are built in TAIWAN not the People's Republic of China! These people are not slaves, and believe me they are definitely not Commie! These guys fought the Commies, and fled to Formosa (now called Taiwan) to remain free, and hopefully some day will be able to return to the mainland and liberate their homeland!

Believe me, if anyone wants to see Communist China fall, it's the Taiwanese! And yes, I'm Chinese, but my family has been in the states since one of my great-grandparents came here in the 1800's!

Using MicMurry's logic, shouldn't we all stop driving our cars? Isn't all that money going to the Arabs to support terrorism? Don't buy anything Japanese or German, too, because we will only be funding another Axis resurgence! Hell, in the Marines you get a book with a brief history of the Corps. We have fought the Italians, Mexicans, Flipinos, Panamanians, Spainish, Cubans, Koreans, British, the Southern States, Granadians, French, so why do businees with them?

Indeed. Let's get our facts straight. The CRKT knives are made in Taiwan. Kershaw Vapors are made in Japan (early) or CHINA (recent).

I have owned all three. So, unless Taiwan is making blades marked CHINA, then you are incorrect. I have owned many CRKT and both make of Vapors. They are both excellent EDC type knives.
