Today is a 2 days holiday in Malaysia --- it is another celebration here --- A Chinese New Year --- A Snake Year!

Sing & Other Chinese Descendence Forumites --- Yahdikumu-(A)llaah!

How's the Chinese New Year being celebrated in US ... any Lion Dance being performed there ... Pakcik Bill & Fellow Forumites?

Tang ... tang ... bum ... bum ... (Is that the sounds of Cymbols & Chinese Drums?)

Well.. just came off a wonderful family dinner, and a good ol' round of Chinese craps w/ the family, while eating some 'tang yuan' (rice balls around sesame filling, boiled in water). Got some 'age pressing' money too :-)

THough it's not nationally celebrated in the USA (yet), Most Chinese families, such as mine, are doing it the traditional way :-D

Mohd--Lion dances with firecrackers happen in big North American cities having large Chinese populations, like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. Today is a big day there. Elsewhere out in public you'd have trouble knowing it was Chinese New Year except for brief national news reports and the fact that the weekly food supplement section in most newspapers seems to be devoted to Chinese holiday cooking. We are making hot and sour soup tonite and shooting off Roman Candle fireworks.

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

To my Chinese and other Asian Brethens who celebrate the lunar new year. Also, to anyone else who wants a reset if their western New Year has not gone too well.

Closed out the year of the dragon with a big feast last night with the extended family. Definitely a great meal. Opening the year of snake with dinners at my in-laws on Friday and my family on Saturday. These tend to be more vegetarian based affairs with some chicken in the mix.

In Boston Chinatown, the lion dances are always on the Sunday after the actual New Year. Lots of firecrackers, lion dances, martial arts demo's and tourists. Think I'll stay home for a quiet afternoon.

I love to watch these kinds of celebrations!!!!
It's always good to see people celebrateing their so very colorful customs.
Somehow most people in the US of A have forgotten their roots and turned into "generic people" with no memory of where they stem from and that's a dayumed shame imo.
Except for those who still celebrate the customs and culture of their homelands the USA has becames a drab boring place that has no colorful customs or cultural heritage of their own. And/or spiritual customs as well.
However some ethnic groups have borrowed some things from Christianity and their homelands and have fun with their celebrations.
The Dixieland funerals have Lots of Heart & Soul and at one time I thought that would be a good way for me to go out. At least the family would have something to talk about for eons.

And some ethnic groups still remember and have their celebrations. We have a rather large Scottish population here in Tulsa and their annual games are something to see!!!
I think most of the older ladies there are still trying to get a peek up the mens Kilt's though.

And of course us ndns have our powwows and the like.
And sadly us ndns have a lot of cultural theft from those that have lost their own ways.
People are always saying something like, "I feel so drawn to the ndn ways and feel that,so on and so on and so on." Most of them don't "get it" though.
The best advice we can give those people are to search their own roots and find their lst ceremonies and culture.
Personally I am pleased to see the growing influx of Covens, Druids and the like as these people are bringing back something important that they have lost imo.
People need something from their home and past to cling to to have a sense of "belonging." again imo.
I was always lost and felt that I ever belonged to anything until several years ago I truly connected with my people and our ways.
If I had a Million DOllars to lay on the Drum it wouldn't begin to pay back what I have gotten out of coming home.

So the God(s) Bless You All and keep your ways alive.
Happy New Year!!!

We called it TET in Viet Nam. There were lots of fireworks.

So, this is the year of the snake.

As humans and bison are immigrants here, we once thought it important to assimulate. To become Americans.

Learn the language in a couple of generations, serve your country; that sort of thing.

Not too tough. You just have to believe in the founding principals. We all know what they are.

Now we have people who are illiterate in more than one language.

Thus, multi culturalism and cultural diversity. The ignored Chad who is serving on a Naval warship. He can`t vote.

To judge from what they say, the politicians don`t read The Constitution that they swear to defend.

An armory used to be a place where arms were stored. An arsenal is a place where ordanance is made or repaired. We English speakers don`t even talk the same language anymore.

Talk about a house divided; half of us in a few urban counties,(628), want a federal dictatorship. The rest don`t.

We will see.

FNG,

I've read some of your replies to this and other posts, and they seem to have some sort of "edge to them". Lighten up. This is a friendly forum. Hope you're not looking to start a bitchfest.

Thanks for noticing the edge.
It gets harder every year to keep it.
Some day; fat, dumb and happy; head up and locked?

Your obscure references are lost on me...

"Some day; fat, dumb and happy; head up and locked?"

Is it because I'm not a vet or just dense?

There may be an element of both.

Head up and locked derives from pilot speak for retractable gears.

Fat, dumb and happy refers to the same condition.

Could I be more vague? Maybe.

If you never put your life on the line; how can you know which side you are on?

Bill will explain if I don`t get back.

OK,I have the time. There are a lot of things going on in the landing configuration.

Gear, flaps, prop setting, mixture, fuel on proper tank, all three down and locked etc.
