Chinook $75

That's a tempting price. What are the pros and cons of the hollow grind vs the newer flat grind chinook?

For the average joe there is little difference.

Hollow ground generally sells better to non-afis, likely because it "looks" better.

Many afis prefer a flat grind for easier slicing.

Zen thanks for the reply. Are there some situations where a hollow ground blade is better than a flat ground?

I'm not Zen but I have never seen any advantage of a hollow ground blade over a flat ground one. I don't hunt anymore but when I did, I used either a Sharade Sharpfinger or a Browning folding skinning knife. Both of these were flat ground. This was back before I even paid attention to the difference between flat and hollow ground blades. Even then I noticed that these two blade seemed to cut better and work better than any of the other knives I had at the time. Back then, I had Bucks and some hollow ground fixed blades.

So in over 20 years of hunting, working and carrying a knife, I have yet to find any reason to choose a hollow ground blade over a flat ground one. I'm sure there is a reason for hollow ground but the need doesn't jump out at me.

I have several hollow ground blades that work fine. M Centofante 4, Delica and a few others are fine. They would be better flat ground but they are not bad hollow ground.

I gave in. I already think I know what it'll feel like in my hand, and know I probably will have little use for it most of the time. Blame Ken Cox.
