I'm happy that the company is coming out with some purely tactical knives for those who want it done the spyderco way.

Now, we don't have to think, is this AFCK any good, oh, the REKAT lock is strong, but where's the hole?

I think what the tactical buyers want is:
1)excessively strong lock
2)fast presentation of knife
3)handle that resists all sorts of slipping and protects fingers from slipping up onto the blade

On the Chinook, this looks interesting, in fact I almost asked James Mattis to reserve one for me, before realizing that it was a bit too big for my daily carry(sorry,James).

But upon further thinking, I think I am more inclined to BRAM's Gunting and Sal's Temperence. That Chinook has a bowie-style blade, but other than that and it's superstrong lock, what has it got that makes it better than any other high-end tactical folder? Besides the hole? Neither does the handle shape excite me. Maybe someone can enlighten me here.

BRAM's Gunting is probably the most serious in purpose of the lot, it is made to cover the gap from empty hands to blunt weapon to cutting. But to use it well, you got to do it BRAM's way. If you don't do this, the knife may not be so good for you, correct me if I'm mistaken here.

The Temperence will probably have some familiarity to all spyderco users. This one I know I won't go wrong if I get it.

In short:
Temperence Jr--yes
Gunting--thinking
Chinook--if Temperence wasn't around, maybe

Chinook, if I had the cash.

Gunting is not for me,my Navigator takes out the Temperance.

I'd have to say Gunting first, then Chinook, followed by Temperance. The Gunting is utility over aesthetics (though I think that the Gunting starts looking nice once you think about what the design is for). The Chinook looks better than the Temperance IMO, but then again it's been a while since I've seen the Temperance.

there is "no way" to use a GUNTING...its a kinetic opener..can you slam n jam with it closed..yup..but you can do that with ANY folder..mine just works better..Balisong fanatic? guess you can do all that trapping, pinching, locking..as well.
just want to slice n dice n have fun?? ok it opens with the hole..of course.it opens upon impact..it opens forward, reverse...
Ok are there attributes that if developed make it a better tool for someone? yup..but they are not necessary..
As for ugly?? hey personally I think its sexy....
If you're a martial artist ..well. there's even more you can do..
But hey..pick whatever..My toy is VERY SERIOUS..so serious that it comes with a trainer..a functional trainer drone...that it comes as a self defense tool...tthe CRMIPT...that we give a video telling one what to do..
Hey I love the CHINOOK..and the TEMPERANCE Jr..they're my GUNTING's stable mates..and by the way,..they have functional trainer drones coming as well..I'll see to that!
This is the start of the no nonsense line up..
MBC all the way!

The one I'm really looking forward to is the Temperance. Smallish size, huge belly, full guard... I've been waiting for a design like that for awhile.

Personally, I don't think the Gunting's my cup of tea. You can tell that a lot of intelligence went into its design though; everything about it seems to be well thought out.

Chinook? I'm not sure if I'll buy one yet: I'll have to handle it. I love the design, but it might feel too wide and/or heavy for comfortable use.

Chinook: Wouldn't buy it personally. The design does nothing for me and with all due respect to Spyderco and JAK, I don't think the price tag is justified.

Gunting: My only problem with the knife is that I need something more discreet and I just can't see any way to carry it discreetly while keeping it accessable. I often wear a suit to work and see clients (most are sheeple) and the Gunting would just plain scare the crap out of them.

Temperance Jr.: This would be my first choice as it seems to best fit my needs wrt blade length, discreetness, etc. Now if we could get an update as to anticipated release date and price ... hint, hint Sal ...

Make mine a Gunting, all the way. For me, this is the most anticipated knife since the Sifu. All I can say (ask) is, WHEN?

I will probably add a Temperence to my Spyderco collection first and then a Gunting soon after.

Unless the handle is really awkward, the Temperence is a done deal for me. My fave blade shape, what better way to put the new compression lock through its paces?

The Gunting is a maybe for me. It doesn't fit in with my striking style (I box, so don't use guntings), but maybe after the video I'll change my mind. Regardless, though, the Gunting should probably be in the collection of anyone who loves combat blades, just due to its interesting design.

Chinook is not interesting to me right now.

You didn't ask about the Vesuvius, but it's on my list as well, assuming it's actually going to be a product.

Joe

Sure it does Joe..if you box its really easy to use..LOL..the ramp sticking out slightly from your fingers..horns at each end of your hand..my my my.nasty punching....ROFL!
As for suit wear and dress wear..well thats what those really cool kydex dress holsters are about...they go on your belt or a shoulder rig..I personally wear a shoulder rig when I wear a suit..
I wear the holster alot and most people never notice the GUNTING..the eyes see it as a pager, phone..anything but an edged tool..
Hey..its not for everyone..but its going to come close..
Owen Wood is gong to make a custom "dress version"..carbon fiber, titanium liners, really thin, with damascus blades...
The GUNTING comes out Sept 1,,CHINOOK is delayed I understand...engineering glitch..
have a great day!!!!

Yes! That is very sweet looking using knife. I'm very interested in getting one if and when it makes it into production. Much more so than the chinook or temperence.

Gentlemen, thanks for all your postings.

Abt the Gunting, my problem with it is how to carry it. I work in a trading room with abt a hundred and fifty other brokers, and since it's a tropical climate year-round outside, everybody wears only long-sleeved shirts and slacks. So no rigs are possible, even the belt holsters are also a no-no. I generally carry my knives completely inside my trouser pockets, then go to a clipped position when I am outside my office. I also only wear trousers with vertical side pockets and no front pockets....

From the way many forumites have written, you can see that they actually WANT to buy the Gunting, but have worries abt its carry-bility, suitability with their style etc.

It's obvious that there is something SPECIAL with this knife, but that makes it also hard to accept....

The weird thing is to see people who aren't wearing jackets, and to see no pocket clips or belt pouches, and wondering if all those people are really walking around knifeless!

I walk around with knives perfectly visible. Then people don't say "Anybody have a knife?" when they need something cut. They just say "Jim!"

Of course, you know you're a complete knife nut when someone says "Anybody have a knife?" and you say "What kind?" Half the time they're looking for the screwdriver or can opener.

BTW, that Vesuvius (thanks, Sal!) has gotten a lot of use, and people I show it to generally think it's cool and not evil (the "sea change" G10 helps there), and half of them can even figure out how to release the lock.

The grooved thumb ramp on the top rear of the blade makes it a right front pocket knife, since it tends to hang up on the corner of my right rear pocket when I draw it.

Bram,

The Gunting is obviously well designed, there's no doubt about that. I can visualize all kinds of nasty things to do to someone just from looking at it and I'm sure I could come up with more after watching the tapes or attending a seminar.
biggrin.gif
The problem for me is how others would respond to it.

Although I wear a suit to work, I don't keep the jacket on all day because it's not comfortable. My clients would be really freaked out by a knife holstered on either my belt or a shoulder rig .... and my boss wouldn't like it much either. Even clipped inside a pocket, it rides high enough (from the pics I've seen) that it would cause problems with clients and co-workers.

Then there's the sheeple wife factor.

She already thinks I'm nuts with the full-contact stick sparring, live blade training (especially since the severed tendon) and carrying 24/7, etc. If I started carrying a belt or shoulder holster, she'd REALLY think I'd lost it.

Besides, I think it would make the local LEO's (Maryland) a bit twitchy

I'm betting it's a great knife functionally, but I'd never be able to get away with carrying it and we all know that it's no good to you if it's at home on the dresser.

Respectfully,

Dave.

How do we know what these knives are supposed to look like? Oh yes, and the price of the knife will be the determining factor as far as I'm concerned. The closer it is to $300.00 (US), the less of the chance that I'll purchase one.

I've posted pictures of the new models - pictures from the Blade Show 2000 off my digital camera - in this forum, mostly in threads dating back to June.

I think I now have all or most of the new Spydercos listed, with thumbnail links to those Blade Show pictures, together with the current line, on my Spyderco page - but if there's no price tag it's too soon to order it!

Those pictures and a bunch more images from the Blade Show can be found in the directory listing at www.chaicutlery.com/BladeShow2000
