Found one, and got it Friday. Not for sure if I like it better than the III. It is heavier, harder to open, and does not snap shut. Is this because it is new, or do I need to adjust the pivot? It is the S30V steel model. Should I keep it? The guy I got it from said he had some more. Always good to get you guys advice.

If it doesn't snap shut, it has a problem. It may simply be the pivot is too tight, could be lack of lube. I'd try washing it in hot, soapy water, thorough drying and proper oiling before I started tweaking on the pivot if it was me.

Yeah it would be pretty old; perform a good old wash and lube before passing judgement.

The S-30V Chinook I from what I was told was the blade steel that they used in the final batch that they made. I am not a really big fan of the Chinook models even though I have one at the present time. But I was told that the S-30V Chinook I is definitely a "collector's jewell" for sure. I can only remember seeing 2 on Ebay this entire last year and only one here on BF.

The Chinook I is significantly heavier than the II or the III but the funny thing is that I have talked to 2 guys who still like the I model better

The one model has a swedge on top of the blade spine which is unique because it's successors don't have that. Good find. I would hold that one for a while for sure

I may have a Chinook I to trade someone if they're interested. Mine has a little ding in the edge from some %&^! who used it to pry a staple or something, but otherwise it is in good shape. I'm not sume mine is S30V, though. Definitely a Chinook I, though. Has the up/down blade play as has been discussed, etc. Anyway, if you want to wheel and deal I am up for it. Drop me an email!

Put it on e-bay. Wanted to keep it but have a big insurance payment.:(
