Chinook II or Emerson CWQ for SD?

This might be a silly question, do you have any training to use a folder for self defense?

If not, you should learn at least some basics and practice.

As far as each knife concerned goes. You need to spend some time handling them. You may find that the one you initially purchsed may not be what you are looking for after you have spent some time learning to use it for SD.

Both knives are great and you have heard some good arguements for and against. My personal choice is the Chinook 3.

Let me just say I agree with Dirk. You need training with any knife or weapon you have,or its over before it starts. And the whole squeezing the handle and something clicks thing with liner locks, never had it happen. I tried it with all three of mine and can't get it done.I'm 5'10 and 215lbs. and compete in power sports. I can grip and hold 630lbs off a rack for 20 seconds before releasing and deadlift 405 for 12 reps. My grip is strong enough I would say and just cannot get the liner to move. These are all Emersons by the way.I would almost think adjustments need to be made on those knives that have a movement in the liner. Now, this is not to say that a Framelock is not better, as anyone who knows about knives knows, framelocks are better.Just don't be affraid of the right(well made) linerlock.

Strongly disagree that you "need" training. The knife is a very effective equalizer. Untrained people use them effectively all the time. Given the choice between having to face an average guy who is empty-handed but who has trained in martial arts for years, or an untrained teenager with a knife, I'd pick the empty-handed trained guy almost every time. To use a knife effectively, arguably mindset is more important than anything else.

That doesn't mean I don't think you should seek training. Training is a great idea. I train myself. But I'd say it's definitely not "over before it starts" if you don't have training. There are too many real-world counterexamples, tragically happening everyday, to believe that.

Since practically everything you will be doing with your folder is utilitarian , go with the one with the strongest utilitarian function . I would be inclined to an Endura 4 , or a Manix . The Chinook is a good piece , but I'm not a fan of upswept points. A mini Manix might also be a good bet .

I guess when I say that it is my way of making people think of the consequences. I have trained in MMA for 3 years and feel you can learn much about yourself and how you react in that type of situation. Alot of people freek out and can't remember their left from their right hand when faced with aggression. When training in Mixed Martial Arts you learn to fight from your back, which is another uncomfortable position to be in. After training I am comfortable in that position and can keep my cool. If you have a weapon and are aimlessly slashing or swinging at the other person,if trained, they have a probability of taking advantage of a confusing and stressfull situation. No,you don't need to have training as you said. But,do you want to just stun, immobilize or kill them will greatly depend on training or luck.I for one would take the training, because I would rather stun them and maybe choke them unconsious than have them bleed out because of a slashing or sticking escapade.
