Chinook II pics

Yikes!

I'd be interested in a leaf-blade Chinook II, but I'd be more interested in a drop-point or clip-point version.

The Chinook II's build is exactly what I'm looking for, but I dislike having the point way up in the air where you can barely use it on a level surface without tilting your wrist far, or no point to speak of...

I like the trailing point.
It offers plenty of point and it offers plenty of edge, all in one compact (less than 4") package.
While this knife will multi-task, it probably won't do the kitchen knife thing as well as some others, but considering the intent of the designer (Martial Blade Craft and self-defense) I think this knife presents admirable mechanics for the user.
It looks like a good skinner, too. :)

What's that outside? Sunlight?!?

Another...

Is it just an optical illusion or has the point been lowered somewhat on the Chinook II? It doesn't appear to be as upswept as the original. Or is it at the same place, but looks lower because there is less steel on top?

Great news Sal. A leaf blade like the L'il Temp would be a great alternative. A lot of people would love the no-compromise build of the Chinook with a more general purpose blade. Please let us know the reactions you get at SHOT. I know we won't see pics of the proto but I'd love to know if it is well recieved. Thanks :)

When I first saw the Chinook II, I didn't really like it. I think these pics have changed my mind! Looks like a very nice knife; as is the usual from Spyderco.

I'll have both an original and a Chinook II with me at a Gun/Knife show in Lexington, KY this weekend if anyone wants to stop by and do a side by side comparison. Either one is one heck of a knife, but the improvements on the Chinook II make it really rock. Well done, Sal!! See ya' at SHOT.

By the way, from whom did Firebat purchase his Chinook II?

Looks like he got it from Carlos on the for sale forum.

Hi Sal:

Since I won't be at the show, here's my reaction; I would definitely be psyched for a leaf-shaped blade on this knife! It would replace any number of tank-built folders now in the rotation. Bravo for considering it.

Best regards for the New Year.

I am pretty sure that i would need a temperance style leaf point chinook II, i have wanted one since i first held the original chinook.

Firebat,
Like you, I also wanted the original but decided to wait when I heard about the second one. Those are some nice pics, I can't wait until mine arrives.....can't wait.....

Are my eyeballs working right...is the clip black?!? IIRC the early pics I saw showed a polished/silver clip, which really turned me off.

Awesome pics! Thanks for posting them.

This looks like it will have to be my new carry for 2004. As soon as I can find a plain edge.

A full flat grind leaf point model would be even better. That would be a wicked knife. Full flat grind G-10 Spyderco's are my favorite.

That last picture just pushed me over the edge.

In case anybody missed it:

This knife represents my next purchase, and as father with three kids at home, I normally don't indulge myself with something like this.
However, in this case, I will make an exception.

I know in the past few weeks I have complained about not finding one for sale on the internet, and I suppose I shouldn't complain until I actually have the money in hand to make the purchase.
The Chinook II's I've seen so far look like the transition S30V Chinooks.
I see them everywhere for under $115, and sometimes under $110, but, no offense intended, I don't trust the sellers.
I think they want to move their old Chinooks, and I can't blame them.
Nonetheless, I don't want to have to pay to send one back due to a "misunderstanding;" nor do I want to subject myself to that type of disappointment.
So, if I have to wait a coupla weeks 'til I have the money AND I feel assured the seller REALLY has a Chinook II in stock, I don't mind.

Now, as far as these "leaf-bladed" Chinooks everyone says they want: great.
These knives need to have a new name.

I consider the Chinook II, as it stands right now, the classic martial-blade-craft folding knife of all time.
Someday people will collect this knife and it will demand big bucks.
People will brag about having a first-year of production Chinook II.

I think the folks at Spyderco have done a great service for the knife community by producing this knife, and at this price.
Well Done!
Freeze this design for awhile and produce lots of them.

Mike at New Graham has them in stock. They just put it up on the site today.

www.newgraham.com

I've always received great customer service from him in the past.

V-1: Glad to be of service.:)

Ken: Like V-1 mentioned, New Graham just posted them. I'm sure if you dropped them a line, Mike will verify whether or not they have one available for you. I know what you mean though, I always e-mail or call e-tailers first to see if there's physical merchandise to back up the listings. As for the knife itself, all I can say is go for it. Especially considering your position as mentioned, you will not be disappointed in this indulgence. Plain and simple, it's a keeper worth every penny.

Likely the nicest Spyderco I've ever purchased. Well, if not the nicest, then the most substantial and impressive anyway. Just absolutely built like a tank and finished to the nines. I just can't get over the feeling that it's ready for anything. That's an enviable characteristic for a folder, and something I'm sure Spyderco is proud of.

If you get one one Ken, and I hope you do, please post back w/your impressions. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Scott

The new Chinook looks great. A real improvement over the first Chinook. A classic - like the Military is.

I looked at the old Chinook in a store, ( Al Flaherty's), and I tried to like it enough to buy, but it just wasn't right for me. A nice knife, mind you, just not my style. The new Chinook II, with all it's improvements, is definitely something I'll buy.

A leaf-point blade, in addition to the trailing-point blade, sounds good, too. From the pictures of the knife, it looks like a clip point would work best in the new handle. We'll see.

Way to go, Spyderco.

I'll add in a few pics I took myself for some of the Chinookies I know, and say they are in stock in the store:

If you look at the Chinook II page I put up 3 pictures that come in 1024x768 and 800x600 size for desktop wallpaper, if you need a diff size let me know, here is one of them:

There are some close ups also, showing the new blade shape and thumbramps and also the cutouts in the handles for indexing:

Normaly I don't go through so much in taking pictures but I was having fun shooting the Chinook II and the pics were coming out nice so I went a little extra in fixing them up. I will also not that I was never a fan of the Chinook but I do like the Chinook II but you better like a beefy knife if you want one of these because they are handfull, a good handfull though.
