I am not sure how this happened because its on the spine of the blade. My G10 endura has been used very little sence I have received it, I think cardboard has been the tuffest thing it has cut. Its not a big deal to me because it on the spine and you have to look close to see it but what does concern me is that it could be a bigger problem that I don't know about. So tell me what ya think.

Looks like an airbubble in the steel. Pretty rare on japanese stainless but it happens to all steels once in a while.

Once again, I'm very impressed with your pictures. I'm having a tough time getting this in perspective though. Also, how long has it been like that? Rust has already gotten in the chip. Joe

The knife is only about a month old and I think it happened in the first week. here are some more pics.

ah, yeah that is strange. like a mini sinkhole. Definitely covered by the warranty, they would probably swap it for a new knife. You could probably just use it without any negative effects, but that might be something they would want to check out for themselves.

Good pics.

It was something that I have never seen before so I thought I would share. I have bad luck with knives, I always get the ones with little problems. I need to send it in for service anyways it has a few other small issues that need to be looked at.

VG-10 is a new steel for me and I hear a lot of people say it has equal or better edge retention than S30V but I do not see this as true. In my uses it has had much less and also seems to have less impact tuffness. Am I on the right track here?

I wouldn't say that it has less impact toughness, but it doesn't have as good of edge retention. It sharpens up much easier, however. Some say it takes a keener edge but that might be due to the sharpenability factor.

VG-10 is supposed to have equivalent edge retention compared to 154CM. I've never heard anyone saying it is in the class of S30V in terms of edge retention.

I agree it seems very close to 154cm.

It is in the class of S30V in my experience, when it came to cutting cardboard and fiberglass strapping. Both types of steel would last about a week before needing to be resharpened.

AUS6 wouldn't last until the end of the first day doing the same work. I haven't really seen much of any kind of difference between S30V and VG10. They are both excellent steels in my opinion.

As long as you don't lump AUS-8 in the same class as AUS-6, I find that my VG-10 takes a keener edge and holds that "scary" sharpness for longer, but the S30V holds a "fine" sharp edge for longer. S30V looses the "scary" edge quicker, but overall is a better performer.

I'd say VG-10 has better toughness then S30V. From what I've read mind you, I don't go stabbing knives into trees, or hammering them into concrete. Leave that to Cliff. ;)
