Chipped Out Kershaw Camp 14 And 18

The toughness of steel suffers when the temperature drops to certain point (the temperature depends on the steel). Many blacksmiths will heat their anvils in the winter (in unheated shops) to help avoid the chance of chipping a cold anvil. 1060 steel is one of these steels and the toughness drops off dramatically.

I had the same problem with the 14, a very chip flew out and
Come a hair of getting my face! Weather was warm. The wood was springy and tough. The chip was an three inches tall by five long.

If the steel had chipped that bad then why didn't you take pictures and show it here on the forums?

Pics or it didn't happen.

I have never had a bad dealing with any Kershaw that I have ever called in warranty about. That is the beauty with Kershaw or KAI is that they actually provide a very excellent customer service. I have 16 Kershaw's at the moment and can say without doubt that they have honored every broken or replacement part. When you buy Kershaw you are not just buying the knife but the actual service behind the blade. Even the Chinese blades from what I have seen.

Ill post a pic of chip and blade later today, someone will have to help me though. It chipped out on some hedge branches, green, and thick as my index finger.

That chunk of steel is quite large. I'm surprised you machete didn't break?? But it looks closer to 1.5" x 3".

I will post more pics, I have some of the chip to show grain, and
will take some of the blade itself. The grain is very fine.

Sooo...grew a lil' bit curious... yea..people usually run when I get that grin.. so since my 14 failed completely, I decided..hell..why not..and went for it.. took the ten and whacked my dumbbell..hehe. hit it 5 times, end result being 2 small chips in the edge. No big deal. Swung hard enough to knock chips out of the metal plates. Nothing at all like the 14.

I have the whole series and haven't had any trouble right now. I use them weekly but on wood.

Hehe..love the 10. Its tough as a brick s%=$house. Out of curiosity, I battoned through a pile of seasoned oak, felled a hemlock, and even hacked and smashed a brick to pieces. It was fun..it easily survived it all easily. Dont care for the 14 or 18 though.

Had the 14 bust out chips on me lol. Still weary of them, although, I do plan on giving the 18 a try. Had one on order just three days ago, but the place I order from goofed and had me down for 12 instead of one! Lol. I will get an 18 next time I order and run it ragged.

Got bored a few days after that..got a 2 pound batton and a brick, hammered the edge through it several times, hammered it through a quartz, and then repeated with a hammer. Chopped through a small diameter poplar, about as thick as my thigh. Hammered it through the sections, and battoned all the rest. Then chopped up the limbs. Hammered its edge through a couple steak knives. Dug holes through 2x4s. Hammered nails with spine. Cracked nuts with spine. Shattered bricks with spine. after all that..took it to my three stone system, starting with aluminum oxide, followed by an india stone, and lastly a soft arkansas. Shaved easily, cut my finger, and sliced through phone book paper cleanly. After that..a couple thousand throws (over a couple weeks time), right alongside of a CS pipehawk. 25-30ft range, 7in diamter target, axe first then the 10, right beside each other..which ending up destroying the axes handle.

Yep, I am..Bored2deth..:D
