Chipping problems with my Spyderfly

I wasn't sure where would be best for this topic, but I suppose this is section is fine.

Well, I got a Spyderfly for myself about five months ago, and proceeded to do little with it except open the occasional letter or flip it around a little bit (thought I could learn to use a balisong, but never had enough time or patience). Yesterday, I went over to a friend's house with it, and we fooled around a bit with it. We tossed an old cardboard box at each other, slashing at it, and practiced a few jabs on the same box after placing it up on a chair. He tossed the box at me twice, and I tossed it at him four times, and we each had a few jabs at the stationary box, and that's it. After this, I was cleaning the blade and noticed that the blade had chipped multiple times, from the tip to the middle of the blade's edge.

Now, it was a average cardboard box, no metal staples or such holding it together, and it wasn't thick cardboard. We didn't use the knife for anything else that day. We never struck the chair by accident, or dropped it on the ground, or such. I'm guessing the blade is just over hardened, to chip on such material (It's one of the 440c bladed ones, by the way). I'm still a bit of a newbie to knives, but I'm guessing it's unusual for a knife to chip so badly hacking up one cardboard box.

Well, it has been five months since I bought the knife, so I don't think I can return it, and I don't have the box anyway. Would this knife be covered by the warranty? I'm also curious if this sort of chipping has been experienced by anyone else with this model of knife.

Sorry to ramble on, and sorry if I'm asking stupid questions.

Assuming you're being honest about the usage and the chipping, it seems like something that Spyderco would cover. I'd give them a call or e-mail them and explain the situation.

They've halted production on the Spyderfly (maybe permanently... but that's unconfirmed), so if you send it in, it will not come back out. I believe that they'll trade you for a knife of equal or lesser value, but not another Spyderfly.

Depending upon how bad the chipping is, and whether or not there is actually a problem with the steel, they may simply put a new edge on it.

I belive you are right. If you send it in I would bet you would not be able to get it back.

One guy that I know of couldn't get his Spyderfly back. The explanation was that there was a potentialy problematic flaw that was inherent to the design of the Spyderfly. I don't believe that we got any info back on what was going to happen to the Spyderfly, Szabofly, or the mini Spyderfly. One good sign for the bali community is that a Smallfly was featured at the Amsterdam show.

to my knowledge the current lack of spyderflys is due to US customs saying one or more of the components is "Questionable" now what that means i have no idea.

The only thing like that (flaw) that I have heard about was the one TazKristi said was a problem with that individual knife which could not be corrected, it was not a design defect in the model line.
Import restrictions are causing problems with the 'Flys, and have apparently doomed the Bi-fold.
That is YOUR tax dollars at work

Well, I think I'll just keep the thing as a flipper/letter opener. Shame about the Flys and the Bi-fold, they're all rather appealing designs.

Have a hunch the "couldn't get his knife back" statement is also a misinterpretation or misunderstanding. To the best of my knowledge, if a knife where the problem is deemed to be a warranty issue is both unrepairable and cannot be replaced with one of the exact same model, Spyderco gives the customer the choice of either a credit slip for full MSRP of the knife redeemable at the Spyderco Factory Outlet, or to have their knife sent back to them as-is.

Hi Bandersnatch,

Sorry 'bout the chipping. We could not tell the cause without inspecting the piece, but as mentioned, due to some customs issues, it you send it to us, we cannot return it. I would suggest resharpening the model and see if chips return.

Since the knife cannot be returned to you, maybe if you ship it in, Spyderco will replace your defective knife with one of equal value that customs deems legal?

What happens if the damage is deemed as not covered by warranty? Seems like a pretty big risk for either Spyderco or Bandersnatch to agree to something sight unseen.

:(

Sal- do you have any news on how the balisong issues go?

Hi Bandersnatch,

What Mr. Brwnshoe suggests is possible. But I might point out that the odds of your getting another fly are not good. I would try sharpening first and make sure the problem is not in the sharpening.

Hi Peter.

Still sorting.

I thank you very much for your suggestions and all. I'm keeping it for now, and I've worked out the chips and am going to resharpen with my Lansky kit. If it chips again on soft materials, I'll know for sure it is defective.
