Chipping with ZDP?

Is anyone getting this? I've noticed dark spots on the edge, and at first I thought it was a stain or something as I occasionally use the knife to cut food, but on closer inspection it looks like material is missing, chips off the blade. It isnt too deep and I could sharpen it out. Is ZDP a bit hard, or anyone else getting this?

Anything is possible but I've never had any chipping in my knives. From what I've seen it would probably take an impact or , more likely a lateral twisting force to get it chipped. I typically slice with these type knives and don't encounter any chipping. Can you post any pictures, or have you looked at the edge under a scope (10X or so)?

Is ZDP a bit hard,
ZDP is hardened to, IIRC, 65 by spyderco which is not running it particularly hard at all. You can run this steel at RC67 by design, so yes, it's hard. No, not as hard as it could be. It's just about perfect for the pupose the knife is designed for though. It's great stuff IMO. Joe

No, I've never cut anything harder than paper and the occasional fruit and vegetable with it. I'll post a pic when I get back home in about a week and a half.

Maybe. I've never seen rust or corrosion anywhere else on the blade. I did find a thread searching this forum.

There have been early reports of ZDP D4's microchipping. I believe the most common remedy was to sharpen the knife a few times to get rid of weakened steel at the edge. I would try taking a fairly coarse stone (i use a 220 grit) and slice the edge into the stone once of twice. This will completely dull the knife but it will get rid of weakened steel. Next step is just to reform the edge. If you still notice chipping after doing that I would try it once more, and if you still have problems send it back.

I know of one report of a chipped/twisted serration, nothing more. Over all this has been a good run. Nothing at all like what has happened to S30V with post after post. Any steel can be damaged or chip though. Joe

yes, I experienced some chipping on my Calypso Jr. but i think it's because there were already microserrations / weak edge on the factory sharpened edge.
