Ok that’s what I was guessing.

I wrap it with some “coban” self-adhesive bandage to protect the handle. I figured (correctly) that I’d have some over strikes while I got used to the new handle length.

As it gets chewed up I twist it to keep the intact part in front (as in the second picture you indicated) and replace it as needed.

It seems to be working pretty well, as I’ve replaced it several times due to damage but my handle is in good shape.

I’m sure a thicker leather sleeve would work better but I didn’t want to add something so bulky.

I’ll probably stop using it once I’m more familiar with the axe.
 
The reason an axe works is because the haft is narrower than the head. Anything that makes the haft wider than the head will get torn up.

That makes sense. It's a reasonable way to protect a handle during the learning period. Thankfully hickory is tough enough to be forgiving of a few over strikes.
