Hey, I've been wanting to try a chisel grind for some time now and decided I probably will try it on a friction folder. The steel is 1/8 1095. I know uneven grinds can leed to warpige, but was wondering if the same would apply when you have a chisel grind. I don't have the most powerful grinder and would like to do as much as I could before ht. Thanks guys!

You will likely get responses from both schools of thought. I personally prefer to do most of the grinding pre-ht, then grind a little more. Some folks do all of their grinding before, and some do it all after.

For the chisel, I would do as I normally do. Profile it, drill it, grind the bevels with 80 grit to about 3/4 their final depth. HT, then finish the grind. As long as your edge isnt too thin, you should be fine.

Good luck,
Matt

I do it before.
I've done chisel grinds on 1/8" kiridashi and 3/32" and 1/16" neck knives with no major issues. That's in 154CM, A2, O1, and 1095.

and another thing to mention. If you do happen to decide to do it after ht, take it SSSUUUUPPPPEEERRRR slow. if you get it too hot while grinding, you will destroy your heat treat and have to do it again anyway.

I like to grind my folders after heat treat.

.125" 1095 will be relatively easy to grind after heat treat.

You can go either way, I don't find chisel grinds to warp any more than most other grinds I will say that.

There are a lot of factors to consider, for example do you want to have he blade close to finish before heat treat because you are removing stock by hand, etc.

Thanks guys... I usually grind before ht, so I will do the same here... I hate worrying about overheating the steel. Thanks a lot.
