I just got a Mini-CQC 7A. It has a spear point? chisel grind blade but didn't seem very sharp out of the box. I tried to sharpen it with my Spyderco Sharpmaker 30% angle but couldn't get a hair shaving edge on it. Is that normal?

i am not sure that is the right angle, i do mine freehand and eyeball the angle while sharpening them, staying w/the original emerson bevel angle. i wouldnt wanna change the angle any, i have (not purposly) and it takes some work to get it all square again.

i also used to think the hardest emerson knife to sharpen was a spearpoint blade, harder for me than a commander, and last week i worked on my CQC8, and let me tell you its not easy either, w/all the angles, not impossible, but made me long for an old simple tanto blade,or even a SP lol, let me tell you.

30 degree angle is WAY too narrow for the Emerson. The Emerson comes with a 25 degree angle which is like having a 50 degree v ground knife. Even the 40 degree setting on the sharpmaker is too narrow to hit the very edge. You will only be sharpening your knife when you actually hit the edge with the stones. Emersons need to be freehanded, or sharpened on an edge pro which allows you to find and set the exact angle to sharpen at. If you are going to freehand it, the only way to be consistent is to color your edge with a black Sharpie marker, and sharpen at an angle that removes all the marker.

Thanks...the instructions that came with it said 30 degree angle but that didn't work. I'll try the Sharpie idea.........

That 30 degree angle referred to in the instructions would be equal to a 60 degree setting on the Sharpmaker if it had one. The 30 degree setting on the sharpmaker is 15 degrees on each side. The Emerson runs around 25-30 degrees on the one side that is sharpened, equalling a 50 to 60 degree edge compared to a V-ground edge.
