Chisel Grind thoughts?

I am thinking of putting a chisel grind on my first knife (tactical/survival style), and wanted to get the opinions of others on using this grind. My main reason (aside from being sharp as h3ll) is that it seems to be a bit easier grind style for someone like me using only files. So what say ye?

I might be the odd ball here but I like them on small knives up to 4" blades, but it is a personal thing. I think they got a bad rap with all the tantos trying to be tacti-cool.

Yeah, it probably would be a bit easier to file. So long as the steel your using is not too terribly thick, which makes for an awful heavy knife. I made a Viking Scramasax like that, but the only steel I could find was 1/4" inch thick. Well, it's really good for splitting wood anyway.:D

I can certainly understand that. I plan on this being just a personal user/tester. Kinda test out technique and maybe certain steels. My "current" plan is to make basically the same knife several times varying the blade material and grind to see what I like the best. Hopefully I will wind up with a knife or two that will end up in a BOB.

And I am not a terribly big fan of tantos. I am more a clip point or recurve fan from an asthetic perspective, but really value utility above all other considerations. I don't care if it is the ugliest thing ever made, if when I am looking on a blade to DEPEND on it is the one I would choose. That being said, I agree with Einstien when he said "God is in the details", F&F are very important to me. I wanna be proud to show if off & say I made that!

Can anyone give me a reason not to try out a chisel grind? Anybody have experience with making a knife them?

shoot richard j a message. I recall him mostly making chisel grinds. He's in my friends in my profile if you can't find him.

Here is a knife of mine that made it into Blade Mag.

The knife I think made it all the way to Iraq???

And I hope the fellow that owned it made it back safe. -:)

I never did a lot of these, but they are a fun knife to make.

Give it a try, I think you will do OK.

Good luck.

richard j.......ever think about making straight razors????? Those were amazingly sharp. Have you thus far found a "down side" to the chisel grind? I will say that for what I really want to make CM154 or S30V seem to be the materials that will "perform best." I am planning on starting with a less expensive material like 01 tool steel, but would appreciate any tips/pointers you could share with me about this grind. My first experience with it was on a BM CQC-7 I got in the mid 90's and have always loved the edge on that knife. Thanks very much for any knowledge you can share with me!

Todd - what material did you make that blade from?

Too many knives ago and I just can't remember for sure??? I'm getting old...... :)

Now days I log all my folders down for future refrence.....:D

Leu - What angle are you grinding your edge at approximately?

Ummmmmmmmm....i think those blades were ground at 20 degrees. I have done them at 15 degrees as well. Doesn't make them that much sharper in my mind, but it does make the edge more weak.

My thought with using a secondary bevel right now is that I intend to use a nitride coating to help inhibit rusting of the blade. The secondary bevel should help minimize the area that is vulnerable to rust (at least thats what makes sense to me right now). Touching up the edge on a single bevel would leave a larger area susceptible to rust would it not? Please let me know if I am incorrect.

Depending on what steel you're going to use, rust might not so easily form ! I use A2 tool steel and eventhough it's not corrosion resistant completely, I don't have any rust on the blades !

I suppose touching up the edge on a secondary bevel is easier than working the entire bevel of a zero ground blade.
