chive and leek

I just got back from walmart, and picked up a chive. It is great fun, and I love how fast it opens with the index finger "thing". Only problem is, that it seems a bit small, and I am looking to get a leek, but no store around where I live has one that I can play with. For people who have handled both, how does the leek compare to the chive? I heard that the opening action is slower, but how much slower? In pictures, it also seems that the index finger "thing" on the leek is smaller and shorter. Does the knife still open with deploying this alone?

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

I don't have any experience with the Leek. But I've handled both the chives and the scallions. And I can say the Scallion is just as fast as it's lil' brother. But I have a whirlwind that is faster than both. I like the unique serrations of the scallion. U's instead of V's. The scallions fit the human hand perfectly.

My Leek actually seems to be a hair faster than my Chive, or at least so close to it that the difference really isn't a big deal. It also opens just as easily as the Chive.

And welcome to the forums.

thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure that I'll be ordering a leek then pretty soon.

Another question though. Is the scallion not as high quality (I know none of these are HIGH quality) as the chive or leek? The reason I ask is, the chive sells for about $30 on ebay, and the leek for about $40 plus shipping. It seems that the scallion (by size) is the knife between the two, but sells for just $20, cheapest by far out of the three. Is there any reason for this?

Thanks again,
Jonathan

A Scallion for only $20?!? I'd like to know where you saw that. The only model of the Scallion that might go for $20 is the one with the polymide handle but that one usually costs about $35. The Scallion is the same high quality as the Chive. It's just a larger version of the chive.

I have both the Leek and the Scallion and have examined the Chive several times. IMO their speed and smoothness are equal. I prefer the Leek out of all three simply because it is capable of handling a wider array of tasks due to it's size.

Jonathan,

Welcome to the forums.

I have and use the chive, the scallion and the leek. All three are really nice knives and all open with a kick!!!!

The chive and scallion are both far too small for my hands. I have a rainbow leek that is very nice.

i have both the chive and the leek. the index finger "flipper" on the chive is larger and easier to push than the leek. since there is much more blade metal on a leek for the speedsafe to actuate, the leek will open a little slower than a chive, but not much. however, opening both is a pleasure, and once you accustom yourself to how a leek opens compared to a chive, you'll have no trouble at all. btw, both of these knives see a good deal of use and hold up well. worth a look. as far as a chive being to small for the hand.. i think thats the point. it's not supposed to fit entirely in your hand. i hold mine with my thumb and two fingers at the most. it's a nice little knife that will perform cutting tasks like opening boxes with ease.

I think the leek has about a mircosecond diffrence in opening once you get used to the smaller back-fin (index finger assist).

I have a chive, scallion, leek, random task, mini task, lost my whirlwind. If you are checking them out at a store or show, keep in mind that most of these are stiff or slow out of the box and require a little break in time. Decide which blade size is best for your intended use and then get that one. They are all great knives. IMHO
I like the older style random and mini task better than the newer models. They cost more, but have nice G10 scales and seem and seem more solid.

thanks for all your replies.

Zytif, if you search ebay for kershaw scallion, there is a guy selling them for $20 + $6 shipping (buy it now), and you can pick any color you want.

I think that I will be ordering myself a scallion and leek now.

Thanks everyone,
Jonathan
