Choices for a great defensive offensive combat knife?

I like my Randall Model 14.

Yep. I was going to say a Randall #14 also. (Nice one, Rick!)

One of Larry Harley's Battle Bowies might also be a good choice, but hey, I have to go check out one of the Hossom's everyone is talking about.

Al, thats a model #14 with a model #18 blade, a model #1 ns double hilt and border patrol handle.

Larry Harley's Battle Bowie is NOT a "fighting knife". It's a "killing knife". It's grip is set up for the "hammer" (or "Gorilla") position...rock-solid but lacking flexibility.

It's the ultimate in hard-target stabbing, designed to kill boars.

Larry also makes a Battle Dagger that IS a fighter/personal defense knife. It's lighter and allows greater grip flexibility and faster tip movement. It's a good knife, but I think there's several others with slightly better "feel", including the Mad Dog shown above, some of Ernie Mayer's work and the Bill Bagwell-designed Ontarios. I haven't handled a Hossom yet but it's reputed to be in that class.

Getting the balance right on a big fast Bowie-class piece isn't easy. Mad Dog, Mayer and Bagwell are masters, for sure. That list isn't exclusive, it's just what I've handled.

Here's a food for thought from me.

$500 can afford tens of CS Bushman with which you can have enough durability and an extra chance to practice throwing your knife without sacrificing your carry knife. And if you have an adequate walking cane with your Bushman, you'll get a spear in just a second.

...unless you don't mind if your hand stinks of steel.
