choil vs no choil

I asked for the sake of gso 5.1 vs 5 I went with the 5.1 for two reasons.
1. It was available on S!K website.
2. It wasn't a contest of loosing cutting edge because it's the same it was simply just 3/4 inch longer, an added choil. Seeing how this will be by winter and tropical camping backpacking survival knife I think the added heft makes it an able chopper which in this situation is a pluss. But after reading all your comments I feel very different about choils and will not be getting then as much as I have been.
Whoever it was sold me on the fact that if I do need to do long end of blade work I now almost have to use the choil and this will not be very comfortable after some time without gloves....

I went with the GSO 6 without the choil.
Its just about the same length as the GSO 5.1 with more heft and almost an extra inch of cutting edge.

I went with the GSO-5.1 for the added length when I want it (like a GSO-6) but a shorter blade when i need it (like a GSO-5 or 4.1) - gives me two knives as one!:thumbup: And that GSO-5.1 is so perfectly balanced... (not that the choil affects throwing)

But Survive! Knives does a great job offering models to accommodate all tastes... at least when they are available. Finger-sized choil or small sharpening-choil, but never a lack of that notch resulting in a large flat-section of edge as is common on Kershaw/ZT and others :thumbdn:

How this for no choil, a handmade knife from Tim Johnson of Blackstone K&T:

I love a recessed index groove (images of Swamp Rat Vex and Busse Hog Muk pulled off the web):

same here yalls, generally I would not buy a fixed blade knife with a choil, except that differs on a folder. I love my esee 4, no choil and I would never buy any other knife, but it just gets in my way!!
but on my CS recon 1 I use the blank spot between last part where a finger goes and blade, im always using it, so I guess its just my preference its ok on some folders, but generally I would avoid them.
