Choils like em or not......

Ive got a a couple of knives with a choil....Id much rather have more

cutting edge than a choil. I very rarely need to choke up on a blade to

need a choil. The cc SMF that I have has a big choil...Id Much Rather Have

the extra 1/2" plus used by the choil as a cutting edge:D:

The cutting edge to handle ratio on the SMF is probabaly the worst of any

knife I have because of the Big Choil.

What about you...do like a choil or not? If the knife has a choil do you use

it?

The only reason I've ever used a choil on a knife is because I am forced to choke up and use the choil since the blades edge doesn't continue all the way down to the handle.

If there was no choil, I would have no need to choke up on the blade.

I do not like them.

Edited to add: A choil also defeats the purpose of having a guard to protect your hand on most knives.

Can't stand 'em. Give me more usable edge every time.

Personally, I think they've become a gimmick "Hey, look! I've got a huge choil; am I cool, or what?"

I think they're useless, and a waste of space.

Doesn't matter much to me, but given the choice, I'd take the knife without a choil.

In long term use I have found that finger choils are very uncomfortable. I'd rather have more edge and a well thought out handle.

...but I do like "mini sharpening choils," which only need to be the size of a crumb.

I'm with you on the little sharpening choils, though not everyone likes those, either. One of the knives I designed for a manufacturer has a little sharpening choil, and one guy said he wouldn't buy a knife with a choil like that. Different strokes, I guess. The little sharpening choils serve a purpose.

If a choil prevents my hand from sliding across the blade when slaying a werewolf, then I am all for them ;)

I'm a fan of the forward choil. My choked up grip with a forward choil feels more natural to me. I vote yay on the choil debate.

Don't care for them on fixed blades, and on folders, it depends on the rest of the knife's shape. Can take them or leave them.

People have two definitions of choil. 1) a groove in the tang of the blade for your grip to choke up on and 2) a groove for index finger.

I'm all for a deep groove for an index finger in the grip, but NO choil on the blade. OP should restart this thread with clarifications.

Depends on the knife, the handle design, and the choil's design. More often than not, I like 'em, but could live without one.

I like them. For me, it is far better to have a choil (and handle shape that induces the use of the choil) that lets me have better close up control of the blade. Too many knife designs have handle shapes that force you to hold the handle too far from the blade, which means you have to fight the leverage to do any real cutting. With a choil and the ability to choke up you have the leverage in your favor, and better point control.
