Choils like em or not......

I find that a choil comes in handy on framelocks and liner locks (particularly when closing the folder maybe a little too emphatically)

I think that choils are very comfortable on knives, I really like the ones on my Spyderco's especially on my Manix 2's and my CF Stretch 2.

On a smaller knife, like the Spyderco Cat, the choil allows me a 4-finger grip on the handle. Without the choil, 3 fingers would be all that would fit, so I like choils on a smaller knife. On a larger knife, I would happily do without.

I don't like choils except for long (9+") choppers maybe. For me, sharpening choils especially on folders tend to snag on stuff too often to outweigh the sharpening advantage.

Large choil, smaller choil and no choil

Big Mike posted a good example of a long ricasso modded to a very short ricasso.

Not a big fan,

ESEE RC4 great knife besides the stupid choil

I think the lack of choil is what has popularized the "bushcraft" type blades

I hate them. If you want to "choke up," then get a small knife like the Spyderco Spin. That's where choils belong.

If the Spyderco Caly 3, and the Kopa have choils, then yes, I like them.

For bushcraft choils suck

They take up the most important part of the blade where you can apply some pressure while carving wood.

I like choils on blades over 5" long because on bigger blades choking up on the choil makes the knives less blade-heavy and better for finer tasks. However, I agree with previous posts that choils are not needed or useful on smaller knives.
