Chokwe, yes or no?

Was itching for a new Taichung Spydie tonight, found and ordered a Chokwe from KW after reading all the glowing reviews. Never really cared for the design, but now find it very intriguing.

Then, after further research and reading complaints about lock sticking/galling, etc., I'm beginning to wonder if I made a mistake? Also saw a bunch of 'em FS/FT in old threads on the exchange.

Is this a knife I can use for EDC/food prep/opening mail/opening and closing half a million times in the first week? I've plenty of heavier use knives for heavier duty stuff.... is the Chokwe gonna hold up just fine for all the little stuff? Can I play with it as much as I want, or should I call KW (again) and exchange it for something else?

I have only held one, and that just happened to be while I was in the KNIFEWORKS brick and mortar store. It had some of the nicest fit and finish of any Spyderco I've seen. I don't think you have anything to worry about...especially if you happen to get the one I played with! ;)

I ve had one for several years but have only used it a few times. It s very well made. I think you ll like it.

It's one of the few Spydercos that I dislike to look at, but enjoyed using! It's much more ergonomic than I expected it to be. The thin stock and overall blade shape are very useful.

I'd say try it out.

Does the titanium/steel interface wear together to a certain point and just stop wearing/galling, or is it something that goes on forever?

Yes it will keep wearing and will settle in. This is one issue with titanium as it's softer than steel. However, very few people have ever worn through a titanium frame lock.

On top of that it's a Spyderco, so you can rest assured that they would take care of you.

I did sell mine because I just can't keep them all -

BUT - the Chokwe will do all that you indicate very, very nicely, i.e., "for EDC/food prep/opening mail/opening and closing half a million times in the first week?"

It was a great favorite and I regret that it is gone.

Wasn't really fond of the black G-10. If I ever get another I will make a custom scale. Check out a few modded Chokwes on this page - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/447311-Post-your-Spyder-Pics/page202

That "interface" happens with all ti frame locks, not just the Chokwe.
Damned internet. So little positive feedback, just people whining about everything.
You'll be fine, it's a great knife.

YES.

It makes me want to drill and countersink holes in handles of a few of my other knives.
I don't mind the G10 on it one bit, and rarely desire a wooden handle, but this is one blade that would look Primo with a good wood scale.

Thank you, all!

After the input here, and especially reading an old review of the Chokwe prototype (dude in Alaska who was originally from Africa just loved the Spyderco version and spoke of how well they were able to duplicate the feel and utility of the knives he remembered from his homeland) I am sold!

This picture made me really want one

Should do fine. I have owned a few over the past few years and one or two had some lock stick. Sharpie and/or graphite on the tang solved that problem quickly. F&F is top notch on all of the one's that have passed through my mits.

I'll have her by Wednesday, along with the much anticipated Dragonfly Salt SE that I've kept sliding toward the back of the wishlist for months.

The DFly is just a little on the small side for me but I do think you will be pleased the Chokwe. The Chokwe was my EDC of choice until I got my BM940, it carries just a little better for me. I still have a Chaparral, Chokwe, and my Sage 1. They are all keepers. The fit and finish of the Taiwanese Spydercos are the best in my experience. Let us know if it meets your expectations.

Super smooth opener. Love the weight. I really think it's an excellent fit for the office and around the house carry. Barely notice it in the pocket. The thin blade is excellent from cheese to mail opening.
