I just received two beautiful, but very different, stag doctor's knives from Queen. A few days ago there were posts of a couple of stag knives, and to my great surprise, the popcorn stag knife (my favorite!) was considered by some as inferior to the other with markedly less figure and texture to it, but a warm "burnt" tone. So here I put to you another choice. Both examples are pretty extreme, and have beautifully matched covers of proper thickness, so no difference there.

#1 is a dark amber stag with warm burnt tone to the edges

#2 is lighter flame popcorn with a smoother texture

I think both are spectacular, but I voted for the #2 choice, the lighter flaming popcorn with smoother texture.

Those are both very pretty. I don't think I have a preference beyond the standard knife knut response, "Both."

Hard Choice Jeff, with Stag I think the older Stag develops its own beautiful tones that just cannot be beaten, then John Lloyd goes and puts his stuff on scales and Boom!
The ONLY thing I don't like it when the Stag is shaved down and there is too much White - it distracts the nature of Stag to me.
I simply cant choose between those two very nice knives!

I chose Lighter flame popcorn stag like almost everyone else (15-1 when I voted)

Looking at the pictures again I think that darker amber stag could look great if it were worn and used a little and some of that burnt area gets worn away. But out of the box, new the lighter stuff looks better to me. just my opinion is all.

I only will get a stag knife if it is the lighter popcorn type, the darker stag looks like a synthetic cover to me.

Those are both absolutely gorgeous, but if pushed, I'll go with 2.

The red looks fake to me, I voted for #2

in my limited experience, stag gets whiter if buffed out but not overheated. It gets that burned color if heated by buffing in one spot too long. And, stag takes dye easily, as I discovered after putting my peanut in a deerskin pouch and pouring boiling water on it.

So I would go with the whiter one, knowing I could make the color more golden if I chose to.

this knife, in my opinion shows what Im calling Buffer Burn. Its a great knife, no disrespect intended, but if it was mine, I would buff some of the burn back out..

I tend to like non-amber stag with a predominantly light background with dark highlights. Guess that means I like the popcorn stag better.

I voted #1 on the basis of these two knives only. A comparison between a different pair of knives would depend entirely on how each one made me feel looking at them side by side like this...

Between the two knives you posted, I find #2 more appealing.
IMHO, the #2 would be even nicer, if they would have not polished of some of the protruding ridges.

You captured the essence of the poll. Between these two knives, not in theory or in general, but between these two.

My Dad had lots of Uncle Henry's too when I was a kid....so, I chose the lighter flame popcorn because it's as close as I can get to........Stagalon! :p :D

That and brown Sawcut Derlin were staples in my childhood knife memories.

I like the dark amber but the lighter flame popcorn just looks "right".
