Choosing a Cold Steel Tomahawk for my first hawk

Congrats on the pipe hawk. That's the one I have, and would have recommended if I could truly recommend any of their hawks. I just used a bastard file to sharpen mine.

I hadn't thought of using a round file on the eye. May have to try that. I just used a dremel and sending drum, or carbide cutter. Not the best results.

Tell me this: will your handle fit in the eye both ways? My handle seems to be symmetrical, oval, as does the eye. But if I rotate tha handle 180 degrees, it leaves noticeable gaps in a couple places. I guess it is supposed to be that way, but when both the eye and handle appear symmetrically oval, it is a little irritating. I guess because I'm used to the handles on tools like a pick-axe being symmetric, along with the eye of the head.

mine does not either. There is bound to be a slight unevenness to the eye, and the wood has shaped to this particular shape. just keep on the right way.

With the file, I've read that you want to not only remove the bur, but create a bevel along the top edge to help the wood ease into the eye instead of a 90 degree angle plowing it up. this way you can coax it tighter and tighter. I hear lightly tapping it down a bit each day and not using it during this time will help the wood slowly compress for a real nice fit. The head can still come off, but the wood will be very nicely molded to the eye.

That would make sense. I just don't recall that being perceptible on mine.

Yeah, it isn't a super defined egg shape, it is more subtle. I figure it has something to do with having a narrower curve connected to the narrow blade, and a wider curve connected to the wider hammer poll.
