I use a Recta DP-2 box-type compass in tropical forest. I find it is very quick to take sightings with. It has sights on the top of the box and a little mirror that pops out of the bottom of the drawer.
The neck cord is attached to the drawer such that when you lift it to eye level and give a tug it opens, mirror flops down and you have a full view of the dial and decent sights on top for aiming. Just orient, sight your next landmark and go. It is very quick and fumble free. Mac
