Choosing A Knife For My Travels

Just an FYI for you guys, I have an ESEE 5 for backcountry, as well as a couple of multitools and a Swiss Army Knife. Of course the SOG folder as mentioned. I'm just looking for a everyday, discrete, quality knife that no one is gonna bother me over and that would save my ass if I need it too... I'm kinda just tired of pulling out my SOG and people responding like I'm some kinda pyscho when I only need to cut open something.

Justin.H -- I can relate to some extent with the dilemma you're facing.

I have reason to travel up and down the Eastern seaboard, and I don't want to have to research the possible knife restrictions of every state and municipality I cross. For such car travels, I often opt for a combination of a Spyderco Poliwog and Dodo. The Dodo looks pretty much like a fancy utility knife, and the Poliwog just looks -- well -- WEIRD (especially the discontinued model with the stainless slabs). The Poliwog, even with the longer 2 3/8" blade, is still within the constraints of even knife-phobic Boston.

Also, for parts of my career, I've had reason to enter secure facilities (that included metal detection). Admittedly, in some of those instances, all I've carried was a Wenger Esquire SAK. But other options occasionally included the Spydero Lava (sadly discontinued), Cricket, and Tim Wegner Mouse (mine is the old Spyderco S/S version). As someone else mentioned, don't overlook the potential of a drastically smaller knife because of grip dimensions -- the better-designed ones (e.g., Lava and Mouse) offer surprising sureness in the hand. :)

It doesnt't exactly fit the larger handle parameter but the Benchmade 707 has a blade length that should be legal everwhere at just under 3", is one hand opening and closing, and has a fairly unassuming aesthetic.

Good luck making your selection and good luck in your travels. It sounds like a blast to just go out and hit the road.

You could research the laws for the cities and states you'll be passing through, and then you know what your legal parameters are.

If you're looking for a handy tool that could be used as a weapon, and won't look too menacing, look at one hand opening multi-tools, and one hand opening Swiss Army Knives (with non-black handles).

For smallish blades with comfortable handles, Spyderco is a good bet.

Look to the Spyderco UKPK, one handed non locking pocket clip welcome everywhere.

Spyderco Delica 4...

I will second the vote for the BenchMade Bone Collector, model 15030 Mini-folder. Blade is just less than 3", and is D2 steel. Very tough, very sharp and stays that way for a long time.
Here's a link. http://www.benchmade.com/products/15030

Also, the BenchMade Mini-Griptilian is a great knife. Very similar to Bone Collector, but cheaper and a lesser blade-steel. Still, both knives are extremely popular with users. Link:

There are also larger models of both of the above knives, greater than 3" blade, so make SURE that you're getting the blade that's less than 3", if you want to survive a hassle with some cops you might meet on the road. Most cops are great; some aren't, like anyone else.
Good luck and happy traveling.
