Choosing a Spyderco

Somehow in my years of buying and using knives I never seemed to get a Spyderco and now I think that its time I get one. So far I've looked at the Civilian, Tasman Salt, and the Assist w/ carbide tip. Any reccomendations?

If price is a concern then start with a Delica or Endura.
Best bang for your buck; functional blade designs with very good allround VG10 steel, and well thought out steel reinforced Zytel handles to match.
If you look around, you can even get the Delica model in ZDP189, an even better steel.

Higher up you could think about a Para-Military or a full-size Military in S30V steel.
Lightweight, better cutters, and stronger grippier handles made from G10.
There are also Military models with full carbon fibre handles; even stronger and grippier.

If you need cutting power as well as strength, think Mini-Manix and it's bigger brother the Manix.
Same steel as in the Military brothers, but with overbuilt handles and probably the toughest back-locks in the knife-industry.
:)

those 3 are totally different. do you have any idea at all what kind of style of knife you would like best, and what your primary use for it will be?

Well, that's a loaded question, what do you like in a knife? Based upon what you have looked at so far, you seem to go for the larger folders so I would suggest you also consider the Pacific Salt, Military, Manix, ATR, and the Endura 4

Hi Hammer

I would suggest getting a Delica4. Probably a plain edge. Carry it and use it every day for a month. If you've never owned a Spyderco, the D4 will give you a good idea of what Spyderco knives are all about and that will give you better insight into what other knives may interest you.

Mr. Glesser obviously knows what he is talking about, so I'm not even going to bother listing my Spydie suggestions. :D

What he is saying is a must - rather than jumping into something like a Civilian for your first Spydie (which is a non-utility blade), go for a Delica4 or Endura4. Carry it, use it, like it, love it. Then move into the "specialized" knives like the Civilian or heavy-duty knives like the Manix.

Be safe.

Who is this guy Sal and why does he keep cutting in? JUST KIDDING, how can you argue with the Delica suggestion from the man himself, a great introduction to Spyderco for sure, or you could go with the Endura 4 for only a few bucks more, both outstanding examples of utility and value in a folding knife.

don't listen to Sal, what does HE know about spydercos anyway?! :D ;)

just get a Military right away! :)

If I could go back in time, my advice to myself would to be not to buy any entry level knives (not from just Spyderco, but in general) for price concerns. While I've loved my low end Benchmades and Spydercos, they were universally outclassed by the higher end knives I got later and were replaced in their entirety.

From Spyderco's lineup, I'd recommend the Para most of all. Maybe a Dodo, depending on if you're okay with more....unique...designs.

I would follow Sal's recommendation. If you really like the Delica, you will certainly enjoy some of Spyderco's "higher end" products. I own quite a few expensive knives, and the one I actually use the most is my trusty Delica that I have had for years!

Wow Are those three Very Different knives.

What is it to be used for?

The Assist is designed for Ems/Rescue Personel

The Civillian Is disigned as a close quarters fighting weapon

And The Tasman Salt (my preference of the three) seems to be designed with a nod towards the nautical.

Are you just a sheepsfoot Lover or do you have a particular intention for the knife.

I'm looking for a rescue blade but I don't really want to be limited by the lack of tip so I looked at the tasman. The civilian is just a favorite and I figure it might be able to rip through some rope even though that's not what its for
