Choosing between a BK7 and a JAB Potbelly

Ok, so I've been struck with Tweener sickness (who knew it was contagious THROUGH the internet...), and am set on getting the BK17 when it comes out.

Thats a freaking long time away though :(.

When I first got here, I thought the 7in blade length was a waste, it was to long to be short, and to short to be long. Then Moose gave me a USMC, and I have found it be a great length of knife.

Because of that, I've been considering both the JAB Potbelly and the BK7. I know they're not the same, but I want to know how you guys that own both of them feel about them. I've also vaugely considered PM'ing people I know that own them and asking for a trial run (then I could do a comparison review :D), but I don't think I have the time yet to do a review on them even if I had them in my possession (it is heavy duty recruiting season here at school). Right now I'm just getting some opinions.

That, and I'm bored at the laundromat :D.

Now, I don't technically need either of these, and I also don't know when I'll have the funds to get them (if ever).

JAB Potbelly.

Beckers suck.

:D

Oohhhh.....Mooseshine ;) lol

Well I don't have a JAB, but I do have a BK7. So I'm gonna say go with a BK5 Magnum Camp. :D

What?!?!

I have both. And I'm allowed to say Beckers suck. See my contract.

Buncha fanbois.

:D

Shit, I was laffin' as I posted both of those.

:D

I been drinkin' moonshine, overlook me.

Moose

Ahh... drunkposting again...

Nothing to see here guys, move along :D.

It's a tough choice, but I find the Potbelly more versatile. Also, it depends on your intended use.
( I guess you like my Potbelly photo ;) )

Had to pack up and leave the laundromat, sorry I wasn't around :(.

And switchblade, yes, yes I do like your photos (and your review). Do you have the BK7 as well?

I have a ZK War Sword, and find that the handles are less comfortable than the Beckers (IMHO). I do think the Potbellys blade shape is really interesting as well, especially with that hollow grind and that big fat spine.

Anyone up to doing a comparison review?

And does anyone know if the new coating that is coming on the Beckers will be headed to say... the JAB line as well?

the JAB Potbelly is a better chopper hands down

good rocker action on the cooking front

it's thicker too

kinda badass, and chances are, unique in most people's lineup

the 7? great all around knife, you know, until you can get a Tweener ;)

and the JAB? well, the Machax is better ;)

Can you guys identify the "tweener" knife in this video or confirm if it's been produced etc.?? I ran into it while searching for the Machax.

I had a potbelly, but I gave it away. Didn't like the handle or the hollow grind. I LOVE my 77 a little more than is appropriate.

It is the BK16 Short Drop Point blade. That one is a sterile prototype that we have been beta testing for a few months now. The finalized version will have a full flat grind, and will not come with micarta.

They are scheduled to release on April 1, 2012.

Here is what mine looks like. Mine is an early production run, the final version will be slightly different.

There is also 2 other blade shapes, a clip and a trailing point, too Chuck.

It's a computer virus. Duh.

I'd love to see the Potbelly blade with a higher flat grind on a set of good ol' BKT handles.

You sir, are an evil genius.

I'd love to see the Potbelly blade with a higher flat grind on a set of good ol' BKT handles.

Now THAT would be an awesome knife! Shorter (easier to carry) than the BK9, but just as good at chopping because of the thicker stock, and a better splitter for sure! I like that idea!

You know, I got to sneek a peek at Steve Johnson's sketch pad, while we were at SHOT.

I really, really hope some of those designs get chosen to go into production.

So basically, the vibe I'm getting is that the potbelly is a "chopper" for its size, and the BK7 is just a large knife for its size...?

How do they compare for slicy tasks? I mean, I know the blade shape on the potbelly might make it better in some cases, but its thicker.

Also, it looks like the Potbelly might we heavier than the BK7 (and the BK9?).

I've also semi-considered a SYKC 711 as well, but I have a hard time justifying the price seeing how the Potbelly is already more expensive than I'd like.
