Chopper for camping

I thought for a long time that an axe is for chopping wood and a knife is for smaller work. Now I have been using my ka-bar short a lot and I like having a fixed blade knife that I can use for Utility purposes. I have the short kabar, as well as an ESEE 3, and I love both of them. I am looking for a high value knife, one that isn't very expensive but still get a lot of bang for your buck. I was looking at the Becker BK-9, but I would like a recommendation from the BF guys. Thanks. :)

I have been very pleased with the Condor Pack Golok for the price, quality, and function. The Kabar Becker BK-9 is a big knife. I just personally prefer essentially a short machete for chopping.

How about a Condor Hudson Bay?

I used one as my firewood processor on a multiday motorcycle trip last summer. It put up with some fairly hard use with no problems at all, and it is cheap and ugly enough not to worry about really putting it to work.

BK&T BK-9----Condor Boomslang----Ontario SP51, SP53, SP Kukri. ANY of those will serve you well.

Check out the GSO-10 by SURVIVE Knive's. Great price for a 3V chopper. You wont be disappointed.

Becker BK9, or BK7, and now the Becker is offered in a BK4 Kurkri configuration. These are all "choppers." Smokey Mt. Knife Works recently ran videos showing Becker BK9 being used with a "baton." Baton is a baseball bat diameter branch used to drive the back of the blade into the material being chopped. This is pretty effective for "survival work" on branches up to wrist diameter. I wouldn't use this method as a replacement for an ax or folding camp saw.

I am curious as to why no one has tried the Condor Dundee bowie. It's inexpensive and huge. It is the same 1075 as the rest of their choppers.

The reason I haven't tried one is that I don't chop. Mine stays under the bed in its box with the rest of my choppers.

Check out one of the Himalayan Imports khukris on their sub-forum. I got a 16"X18oz. "Village Ugly Knife" for 58$ Out chops my Carbon V Trailmaster and my Becker Brute. A very neat knife.--KV

Some economical choppers I've had and used extensively that I'd recommend:

- Becker BK9
- Ontario RTAK II (awesome, a favourite in my collection)
- Tramontina Bowie, part of a two knife set (if ya can find em! ;):D)

Good luck on your search!

Beckerhead #42

Small Hand axe like the Eastwing Sportsmen comes with a leather belt sheath well at least they used to I have not had to buy one in a long while. they hold a good edge I've used one of mine to clean small game before and having the blunt end for hammering is a very nice feature for hammering cracking ect. And weighs about the same a a good heavy hard use chopper type knife. Its 2 of mans greatest inventions on one stick. A hard blunt object for smashing things and Keen sharp edge for cutting things and its on a "STICK". The cave man got it right the first time why mess with something that works.

How big do you want it? Some of my favorites are:

Khukuri House Mukti

Condor Golok

Condor Barong

Meyerco Machete/Ax

Get the Mukti if you want the biggest heaviest knife out there, i love mine and its very well balanced for its size, the Golok if you want it to be a bit more all-arounder with ax-like qualities, the Barong if you want more of a heavy duty machete and the Meyerco if you want something stainless, cheap and suprizingly decent.

I have the BK-2, and the BK-9 is appealing. But I know I will likely not use it when I have the Pack Golok. The Condor Hudson Bay is a real contender for a general camp knife. The BK-2 is actually a pretty good chopper also but I wouldn't want to be chopping all day with it. It's sort of like a ESEE -5 on steriods.

1311 is what I have purchased as my machete/chopper. Its much lighter than I thought it would be and I have complete trust in it.

Not as economical as other purchases but I have no doubt it can take anything I throw at it..

The grass machete is a cheaper option but the handle is not great. Both mine had wiggle from the factory with no use straight out of the box. The blade seems sweet though.
