Chopper for camping

Man GK! After reading your post I think I need another Niner! :D

1311 is what I have purchased as my machete/chopper. Its much lighter than I thought it would be and I have complete trust in it.

Not as economical as other purchases but I have no doubt it can take anything I throw at it..

The grass machete is a cheaper option but the handle is not great. Both mine had wiggle from the factory with no use straight out of the box. The blade seems sweet though.

I was gonna say 1311 but some folks might not feel $199.00 is a "budget" chopper... They are pretty awesome though; I just got mine and I'm impressed!!!

I have the BK2 and the RAT 7 - both are sweet and I am sure the BK 9 is as well and I would love to try a Junglas, but I would think my Condor Golok would far outperform these (with the possible exception of the Junglas). I have used the Golok for a myriad of chores and could not be happier with function, quality, fit and finish, and edge. Throw in the very nice leather sheath and the fact that it is half the price of everything else we are talking about and it is a hands down winner - for me anyway.

For a budget chopper, you can't go wrong with a BK 9. I've got a couple - you'll be amazed how well balanced it is for a big knife.
Budget price, but excellent knife.

If you do get one, give the stock Grivory handles a try before swapping them. Lots of folks don't like them, but they work for me.

Great company, warranty, support, etc. etc.

Stop by the Becker forum. We'll set the hook right quick. (LOL)

Good luck.

As to the OP, it depends on your budget (as almost everything does). If you are going to look in the $200 range then you are getting into custom territory and I would suggest consulting some of the fine makers on this forum.

Good advice. My first thought about the handles was I didn't like them... cheap etc. But my brother in law showed me their design purpose.... they are equally useful for both the regular hold for cutting or just about perfect for stabbing. Think about that.

Their design also facilitates a fairly good base to tie them to a stick to make a spear.

I may talk myself into buying a BK-9 yet. I have a BK-2 and I consider it a beast.

Someone mentioned the Condor Golok for chopping. I have a couple. I like them. But for carrying along a trail and chopping, I would rather carry the Condor Pack Golok. I bought one at 2012 Blade and love it. Big knife and heavy, but very useful for chopping if it is sharp.

Thank you everyone who posted here. I think I am going to go with the Becker bk9 once I am in the budget for a new knife. I would have had the money, but as ammo went up in price, I had to pay $25 more per case, which now makes me no longer in the market for a knife. Thank you all, I'm sure other people will benefit from this thread as well And grease, buy the BK9!
