All right all you big knife fans, let me hear your thoughts on sheath systems for the big 'uns:thumbup: On a knife with a 7+ inch blade, what flips your skirt:p Do you like a minimal kydex to keep the weight down with a dangler to let 'er flop around, a bullet-proof leather baldric system, nylon w/a liner and a ton of tie down points, or do you just shove that big thing down your pants gangsta style:p:confused:

I've kind partial to kydex for the low weight, though I've got some Mt. Mike (Mike Bartolm) leather for a couple of Busse's that's pretty sweet, too. I tried making a basic pouch type belt sheath for a Busse FFBM:eek: That was a short hike-I was up to it, but my belt sure wasn't;) Same with my Siegle Rambo IV kydex with Tek-lok, though that's pretty easy to put on the side of my pack.

I want to know what systems you've used, and what works for you, and how you carry 'em. There's just not enough knife nuts around here that are willing to lug some big steel around the desert for me testing sheaths, so I'd like to hear what works for you. Thanks:thumbup:

If the belt is not attached to my pants (eg. a belt holding a coat closed or somthing) then I woulndt mind carrying it on my belt. Otherwise, I like a baldric. And, I pretty much always prefer leather to kydex, but that is really a taste thing. I really like the sheath that goes with my Koyote chopper. It is really versatile. I can post a pic if you like. I am sure koyote girl would be thrilled to enlighten you on the subject as well.

I was going to say what BarberFobic1992 said but he somehow hacked my brain and stole my thoughts through the internet and now I am sending thoughts of mad barbers chasing him
:p

Seriously though, for a big blade I would think versatility is key. Wide belt loop, D-ring above that for baldric attachment, and a few evenly spaced rivet holes all up and down the sides for lashing to a pack.

I'm a leather lover. Just works that way for some of us.

I like a thigh dangler with ties OR a handle forard high carry with a higher belt for cold weather, OR a baldric OR a pack strap mount.

Guess I swing my leather all ways.

For me it's either leather or Kydex. I like leather for exposed carry...first, because leather typically looks better and second, it's quieter.

Kydex is nice, especially if you're strapping it to your pack or slipping it inside your pack.

If I'm traveling light, I don't mind a baldric, but if I'm humping a pack, it goes inside or strapped to the outside (I'm thinking 8+ inch blades).

Personally, I've steered away from the large belt mounted sheaths for carrying. Most of the time they get in the way and although danglers are much more comfortable than leg-tie downs, these larger blades are just too cumbersome to carry this way for me.

I think the best options I've used are a simple sheath to drop into a pack (or strap to the outside) with the option to attach it to a shoulder strap or baldric for when you're scouting, getting firewood or other shorter hikes from your base camp.

Yes!

Seriously. I like kydex for attaching to my pack. I like a dangler with leg strap for on my belt carry. I like nylon with all kinds of attach points for carrying on a pistol belt, and I like heavy leather on a baldric.

I know, big help there.

I recently bought a chopweiler and swamp warden with a combination leather dangler type sheath made by Rainwalker. Sheath was very nice and well thought out but very heavy. I am having Jeff make a Kydex sheath with webbing drop loop for the chopweiler. It will be lighter and would be easier to strap on pack or put inside.

I'm on the baldric and strap my big chopper to my pack train!

But I'm a short bastid and don't want to be dragging the big knife on the ground when its on my hip.....

JWilliams is not around so I have to insult myself... :D

Simple stud sheath or as Mike Sastre calls it a "Southern Comfort Sheath"

With the addition of a detachable belt loop (or baldric loop) you have the most versatile big blade carry out there.
