I forged this from 1 inch 1080 bar stock which I differentially heat treated to give the cutting edge a 58-60 Rc hardness but left the peen softer so it won't chip if it is used for a hammer. A stone will be required to sharpen in the field rather than a file like most axes. Three of us carried similar axes on an archery hunt last week and used them to cut branches, chop kindling, chop through ribs and pelvic bones while butchering. The edge did not chip or roll over even though I put a thin profile on the cutting edge. This axe is very sharp and will do the work most large knives. I carry one of these in my day pack whenever I am in the woods.

Handle length: 11 1/2 inches
Cutting edge: 2 1/2 inches
Head length: 7 inches
Hickory handle
Leather edge guard

Awesome, totally different from I have seen from you, really cool, I had no idea you did hatchets.

. I'll bet it works as good as it looks!!![/QUOTE]

I was more than pleased with how it worked in the field last week. It is thinner than most axes and cuts very well on small materials and that's what it was built for.

In the future it might be interesting to see the weight of the chopper head posted, or perhaps the overall weight. WJEP has landed a very special creation from Gerry's shop!
