Hi all,

I have been working on a review for a couple of tools, and ended up with a couple of videos. I am sure you are familiar with the BK-9 and the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe. While they are obviously not directly comparable, I think they each deserve a look.

The BK-9 is a lighter chopping tool, and is about the heaviest knife I would expect to see someone take a longer distance. It chops, slices, can be used for batonning, etc. So, here is the video. I dubbed music over it, because I made too many mistakes while speaking:foot:, so it is a bit slow, but you can see how the knife chops.

Obviously, some people prefer to take an axe. I chose to use the SFA because it seems to be the best of the breed for a compromise tool. It has a head only slightly heavier than the typical hardware store hatchets, but a little longer handle that gives it an edge. For most uses, I don't believe you will gain much by adding weight, and much more length would appear to be unwieldy if you were packing it. Here is the video, though it was cut a bit short because I ran out of memory.

I ended up cutting the tree down close to the ground with the SFA, and it took less than 5 minutes from the time I started w/ no notch until it was laying on the ground. It was actually a little over 4 1/2 minutes including a bit of a break.

I hope to do a video using a bowsaw and a machete for comparison now that I have this tree down and laying on the ground.:D We will see how long it takes to get that done.

Sorry for the long post, but my purpose is to show how the two tools perform. While the axe outchops the knife, obviously, they have other strong points that should be considered as well. I hope everyone gets the chance to see a tool work that is different than the one they normally use. My typical choice of tools is a machete and a bowsaw, so the use of these was eye-opening for me as well.
