Chopper - WIP + a folder. UPDATE CHOPPER FINISHED!

That's freaking awesome, you must be very pleased with it :)

Did you find any hotspots on the handle?

Did you feel like it could use a lanyard?

Anything you would do differet next time?

I meant to mention that the hook at the back of the handle did create a bit of a hot spot. I got a blister on the outside of my pinky cutting down the big tree. Maybe on the next one id make that hook a lot less severe and just use a lanyard looped around the wrist for retention.

Thanks again steven.

I'm very impressed with your work Tim. Really nice handle shaping there. For a 3rd knife, thats a lot of good instincts going into it.

They make a vise grip type drill press clamp. Its fast and easy, and really isn't a hassle at all. The bigger bits get more torque on your workpiece. I would have guessed it was the lanyard hole. I like your big tube btw.

Nice work.

Now that I've seen the final photos I have to comment again, lol it is that nice!

:thumbup::thumbup: :cool::cool:

Check out kant-twist clamps for the drill press. I remember reading that anything 1/4" or over gets dangerous fast and to clamp them.

Nice work.

Thanks fiddleback. That means a lot. I think its more like my 5th fixed blade. Yeah, I haven't got an easy clamping setup for the drill press yet but I soups have known better.

Looks great Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim! Looks like it chops like a beast!

thanks mike. It certainly does. I'm very happy with it.

Haha, thanks again Daniel. I've seen those kant-twists. They look good.

Very cool looking chopper, looks very functional as well.

The folder is nice and sleek too, I really like the look of it with that handle material too.

Look forward to watching your other work!

Cool :)

For those who haven't seen this idea (I saw this here on BF), here's a couple old pics of mine showing how I use a lanyard, when you get it the right length, you don't even really have to grip the blade, the lanyard pulls the handle into your hand and prevents it flying out the hand. Also, you can let go of the knife anytime and the lanyard, being hooked around the thumb, will fall over the back of your hand, keeping the knife out the way while you use both hands, when you're ready to go again, the handle is right there when you rotate your hand, very easy to use.

I normally use paracord or leather but this was the strap from a shopping bag!

Again, great work Tim, can't wait to see Chopper #2!

Hey, just a question for you more regular chopper makers. How much better does searching steel really hold up? Because my chopper was still shaving sharp after cutting down a couple of small trees as well as that bigger one and a bunch of other chops into things and the heart of that tree was pretty damn tough. So why insist on carbon?

I'm not too sure what you mean, what type and composition steel did you use?

Sorry. I got a word wrong in there. I meant how much better does carbon steel hold up. Apposed to the rwl-34 stainless I used.
