Here is a mini-chopping review of some of my "blades". I'm no Fonly or Pitdog, but I thought I'd share.

Here is what I was testing:

Saw: 15 seconds
Revolver Saw: 30 seconds
BK7: 50 seconds
Pac-ax: 75 seconds.

I tried to pick trees that were similar in size. Here are the blades and their trees

I had limited time as the Mrs. wanted my home. I left my trees for another morning to finish the tests. Some notes: The Pac-ax definitely got the bigger tree, maybe an .5-1" bigger than the others. And, it was the most awkward tree to get at. I feel that if I would have been better at using an axe/hatchet, that I could have gotten the time much lower.

The pocket chainsaw was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. But, I have the one with just the metal rings, and I didn't take the time to makes some better handles. My fingers hurt after cutting through a few sections.

I was also fairly awkward with the BK7. I didn't want to hurt her, but I also have never chopped down a small tree with a knife before. When I was done, I peeled an apple with it. I couldn't even tell that it had dulled at all!

I had plans of doing more testing with these, but I was to busy enjoying the outdoors... which means slinging! There are more pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/lltmcfadden/Choppin

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Or just stick some stick through the rings and go at it with the pocket saw. Not to jump off of subject, but where did you get the pocket saw?

I'd like to get one of those pocket chainsaws. As for the Becker, no tree is going to do it any harm - I chopped up a 3" tree with my Crewman quite easily when I first got it.

Thanks for the test! it just goes to show that the more efficient a tool is the less energy you will expend using it. In this case, like many, it's a saw.

In case you didn't know, there are actually two kinds of "handled" pocket chainsaws:

If you go to http://www.pocketchainsaw.com you'll see that the Pocket Chainsaw comes in a can with just the ring ends (model PS 103) OR you can also buy the saw in a can with additional tubular handlesj (model PS 102). You'll have to go to other sites to actually make the purchase. Just one of these sites is http://www.campingsurvival.com/pochsawofacu.html .

If you go to http://www.unbelievable-saw.com you'll see a version of the Pocket Chainsaw called the Un-Believable Saw, which is also made by the very same company (Supreme Products) and uses the same chain saw, BUT it comes with nice molded orange handles and comes in a heavy duty plastic zip-closure bag. You can buy it at that site for $22.80 which includes shipping.

I prefer using the Un-Believable Saw's nicer handles, plus I ALWAYS pefer the visibulity of the orange handles, just in case the saw gets dropped into vegitation.

I haven't gotten a chance to use mine yet, but Doug Ritter's equipped.org site speaks very highly of these saws.

I finally got to use my Pocket Chainsaw for real this last weekend. Well, I had used it once before, but the hook/ring things kept coming undone whenever the saw would slack. This time I attached some split ring keyrings to the saw, and attached the handles to that. My friends and I made short work of a downed 8"-10" cedar. It's a good tool.

I have a Pocket Chainsaw and it works very well. Amateur radio operators [Hams] also use it to cut branches to clear them when putting up wire antennas in trees. I was just told by a fellow Ham about his adventures ! He wanted to cut a branch 50' high so he sent up a line [bow and arrow with fishing line] ,then rope with the PCS. After cutting part way through it bound up so he got a 30' ladder and cut the branch further down with a regular chain saw !!...Anyway the PCS and a BK-7 are part of my truck tools !

the hook/ring things kept coming undone whenever the saw would slack.

On the Pocket Chain Saw the metal hooks that attach to the chain need to be able to detach so it all fits inside the can.

On the Un-Believable Saw version the metal hooks that attach the rope to the chain are bent all the way over so that they can't come off.

QUESTION: do you think it is best to lubricate the chain after a few uses to make sure it doesn't rust and/or bind up???

kenk, I gave mine a really nice bath in WD-40, and it made a huge difference in its fluidity of movement. I don't know if that had ever been done.

Great work, I really like my revolver and BK7, both great tools. Why did I send my Revolver back east!?:D

Good test. I love seeing peoples tools in action. I have the "other" pocket chain saw. The Saber Cut saw. It has basically a bi-directional chainsaw blade.

Before you know it you'll be doing this with every knife you own.

Naked, great pics and a really great review.

You and Fonly sure know how to make us crave the outdoors ! :D

Oh, I still love that hatchet !

Well Robbie, I was completely impressed with the saw on the Revolver. It did an excellent job. Had it been as long as the pocket saw, I think it would have taken the trees down in under 15 seconds. The teeth are so aggressive! I had to stop and clear the teeth once or twice, but man... I love it! I was going to try to chop a tree down with the blade and maybe a baton, but I could bring myself to do it... and no need to really.

If I ever decide to let the hatchet go, I'll let you know!

Naked, thanks for the positive remarks.

I have never chopped with my Revolver because it's not got enough weight, and the saw cuts so well I don't need to chop.

I'm not usually a big fan of hatchets........but that hatchet you have does something different........and that is what makes it special I think.

You need to keep that one for sure. ;)

lol dude, thats a pretty looking snake you got there in that river =D
and as for your saw, just some leather or cotton straps would've helped save your fingers.

Yeah, I had planned to bring some straps for it, but I didn't want to give it any more of an advantage than it already had!

That was the main thing I notice about the Revolver that saw was amazing, better than my fiskars, but the length its what can prohibit it. Under normal surcumstances its fine.

Hey Robbie, how about you talk to SOG and get the Mega Revolver. With a 9" blade and a 9" saw? I'll help to test it!
