chopping wood and limbing knife

What happened to the Makers Matchete chop-off thread, did they ever all get tested ?

I think Joe said the testing was done and he is working on editing the vidoes and hoping to roll things out sometime after Blade Show.

And too keep the thread on track:) here is a pic of another chopper:

Cheers for the info Bruce and that's definitely one of my favourite looking choppers ever !;)

Can anyone make some axe suggestions? I have watched a couple axe demos on you tube by mears and the A to Z guy. If I get an axe would the 25 inch model or 20 inch model be ideal? I am no tuff guy but is there a difference between the two for the average guy?

Any suggestions for which axe?

Great design, Bruce.
The swell at the end of the handle looks like you could perform a two finger hold while chopping, like on a leuku.

All

I currently use a rd9 for chopping wood for the campfire and limbing fallen trees. That and my battle rat are the perfect middle ground. I live in a woody area and want something I can occasionally use when I want to really chop wood.

For your original stated purpose, an 18-20 inch axe/hatchet is fine. Good options there are the Snow & Neally Penobscot Bay Kindling Axe (18"), Gransfors Small Forest Axe (19") or Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe (20").

A larger axe is safer, and if this is going to be for the backyard, or for camping more than hiking, then a cruiser-style axe would make a better choice.
Good examples are the Snow & Neally Hudson Bay axe (24"), Wetterlings Forest Clearing Axe (25.5") or the Gransfors Scandinavian Forest Axe (25").

Brian Andrews of Off The Map Outfitters does some real nice reworks of the two listed Snow & Neally axes.

thanks, I will take a look at those. I should be getting something in the next week.

For chopping wood and limbing I'd go with my M-43 kukri. It just works so much better than any other knife I've seen at those tasks. Makes a dickens of a drawknife too.

The wetterling carpenter axe is 20" and the blade is wider. I like the wide blade. Would it work as well as the gb small forest axe for chopping? Both are 20".

It should work every bit as well at chopping. However with more metal you get more weight. So it may be a little less comfortable to carry.

I thought I would let you know what I got. I got a wetterling 2 pound carpenters axe.
I hope to get a tops power eagle and a parang later. Thanks for the info guys.
I am taking a nepal kuk this summer for chopping also.

Hey I was wondering, what are those three knives sticking into the tree at the bottom? I'm more interested in the one with the green blade coating. If you can, please answer as soon as possible. Thanks!

Yes actually. I have the fancy schmancy Swedish axes and they ARE good. But consider Husqvarna axes. These are sold in Husqvarna dealerships and the heads are contracted out to Husky by a famous Swedish manufacturer. You will pay 1/3 the cost for a Husky and still get a top quality working tool.

wow. 6 years since the last post, how did you even find this thread?
pretty sure the green one is a Busse Battle Mistress.

Wow, this is an old thread but it feels older than it is. I now have the power eagle, a golok, a parang, a GB, etc. feels like I have had them longer than 6 years but I guess not... So those three are a Siegle bolo, scrapyard dog father, and busse fusion battle mistress. The green blade is the fusion battle mistress.
I owned one and found it too heavy at the time on my wrist while a small axe at the same weight was fine on my wrist.

As an FYI I use large fiskars splitting axe, and for chopping it rotates a lot, including axes and kuks, but I probably use machetes the most. From marbles, to condor, to cold steel, the baryonyx, tramontina, kershaw, etc. for most work I now prefer a machete. I use one on average every two weeks. Not a ton of experience but enough to know what works for me.

Green one is a Busse Combat Nuclear Meltdown Fusion Battle Mistress (NMFBM). I have one and it's an awesome chopper, heavy though (anywhere from 0.25" to 0.32" thick, 11" blade).
