I am getting one of these in a few days ( thanks superduty truck!) in a trade. How do they do for survival work? Anyone have any pics? How do they hold up?

Thanks,
Joe

I have a Shadow 1 which is very similar. Extremely sharp blade, One Piece naturally, works well with a baton, dark tactical finish. Only thing I did was to dull the sharp knurling on the handle with a piece of wood. Nice Piece.

The Project 1 is a fine knife IMO.

I have two CR knives...the Mtn II (which is similar) and Neil Roberts Warrior I use for Wild work. Both are rock solid performers and have served me well. I have nothing against the round grip/scales of the Mtn II but I prefer a traditional flat because of my defensive edged weapons training/experience. It isn't I can't or won't use a round it is I just prefer the flat...I've trained and used both. For wild work either knife works well.

I can make shavings with either knife in a flash, carve a dead fall snare reasonably well (even with the Warrior surprisingly), baton, chop, slice, dice and do other wilderness related tasks with ease.

Ace,

I don't own one, but isn't it ground from a single piece of A2? Seems like it would hold up better than many....

A2 is great! I was batoning one day and using a stump as my base. The blade went threw the small log and stuck an embedded rock I didn't see covered with moss/debris in the stump. The A2 blade made a distinct sound when it struck the buried rock and I knew what I had done. I looked at the CR blade and it had an extremely light chip that was easily cleaned up the next time I sharpened it. These knives take a lick'n and keep on tick'n!

Chris Reeve makes some great one-piece knives. I have a couple...here's my Project 1 on a little outing with some friends. A solid knife; handle is pretty round with positive grip...almost too much but it didn't bother me after extended chopping; I love the spear point, very stout. Congrats,

ace, back in 2001, on the Vol 11: Solo Survival vide trip, my other crew member, Radio Ray, had a CR Project II, one that he'd had for a few years. Awesome blade. He loved it, and has put it through its paces. You won't be sorry!

I have a Mountaineer II, its a great knife. Sharpens quickly and you can stuff a lot of stuff into that hollow handle. But with the Project, you get 2 more inches of blade and I have heard they do reasonably well at light duty chopping, and it only weighs 14 oz.

Yes, they are made from a solid bar of steel. Chris Reeve's mfg facility is located about four miles from where I live. I've visited there three times. Chris has taken me and my buddy through his entire manufacturing facility to watch how they make the knives, both the fixed blade knives and his fine folders.

It is very, very interesting, to see the beginning, a round bar of steel, as it's being worked on, and then finally, after many steps, becoming a magnificent tool for the field.

Chris Reeve is a gentleman. I suggest that if anyone is visiting Boise, Idaho, just take some time and visit his facility. You'll not be disappointed.

FWIW.

I have a Project I which I got directly from Chris on one of his visits home some years back (he sells 'em at a greatly marked down price too, to take the sting out of the exchange rate, which shows what kind of guy he is).

At the time, I was just excited to be getting a CRK and he only had a limited selection to choose from (unfortunately no Sebenzas). But the Project I spoke to me and I was very happy to have it at a bargain price.

What a great knife its turned out to be. I didn't know much about tool steels at the time, but I really rate A2 now.

Not only is the knife a fantastic tool to use, tough as nails and incredibly sharp, but the sheath is a work of art as well. I love a well-made leather sheath and this is one of the best I've seen.

If I was heading out to the boonies and could only take one, I'd grab the Project I with no hesitation. Enjoy your purchase!

About as good as most coatings actually. Meaning if you use it hard, like batoning though a piece of hard wood, you will see the results.

I keep the edge greased to prevent rust, but stains will appear pretty quick if you're using it on sappy wood.

I guess the coating is a good option for what is intended as a low maintenance, hard use knife for the military market.
