Is the Chris Reeve's Sebenza a nice knife? Do you get it in serrated? So many styles, which one is right? Or stick with a Benchmade that is cheaper?

Yes! The Sebenza is a great knife! But so are Benchmades! ;)

BTW, I wouldn't buy a Sebenza with a serrated edge!

I am new to knives, hope I am not starting a problem asking a question, you all are making me feel bad for asking. Don't ask = don't learn = don't know! Sorry to offend anyone!

Normally we'd tell you to search, but considering...

Its just that topics like this always become flame wars...

Don't feel bad if you are sincerely asking a legitimate question and it's evident you are.

Also, it's not you who has to worry. It's that first guy who says something bad about a Sebenza. Then the fists start to fly!

It's kinda fun standing on the sidelines and watching...Like seeing a cool gang fight! ;)

BG42 is a type of knife steel which is said to exhibit characteristics of ATS-34 but with better edge holding properties. I recommend you take a look at the article in the tutorial section -- steels. Look at the top of the screen.

Aww, heck, I'll go for it.

Yes.

Ninety-nine percent of the time, no.

Whichever one is pretty enough to you that the aesthetics justify the price jump (unless you mean classic versus regular, and that's mostly aesthetics except for a slight blade change).

Personally I'd stick with a Spyderco which is even cheaper than a Benchmade (but that's because I don't want or need the improved performance/statussymbolness enough, and the Sebenza has a couple of things about it that I don't like -- I won't ever own another tip up thumbstud knife, for example), but it's your call.

I am not using it for everyday protection. I would use it to cut paper, boxes, office things, but would like to know it is safe enough for protection.

AAhhhh .. .. .. that's better. My psychiatrist says I'm not allowed to discuss Sebenzas in public any more. But since I don't actually have a psychiatrist (nasty things they are, like cooties) I guess I don't have to discuss Sebenzas in public any less.

Chris Reeve makes the best production knives in the world. Or the best semi-custom knives, whatever you want to call them. That doesn't mean everyone likes them, or even "needs" a Sebenza.

Sebenzas are generally a better choice for people who have had a chance to handle and appreciate them.

Benchmade makes some beautiful and effective street cutlery, too, and I love my Spydies. You can also get good value from CRKT and Cold Steel. Also SOG, Shrade, etc.

How much money ya got? A Sebenza will run you over $200, a BM Griptilian about 1/3 of that, I think, for a tough knife with an axis lock, and a pretty decent warranty.

If you are young, or new to knives, or saving money for food and clothing, you might consider one of the many hard-working choices available on our Exchange forums, "experienced" knives from our fellow forumites, already broken-in and at a discount :D

One thing is for sure. You won't find a stronger lock an any knife. It is safe to use as long as you don't get in the way of the edge. :)

I carried a large serrated, which is a good-sized blade. Then I got a small, and have carried that ever since. It is large enough for most ordinary cutting, a very common pocketknife size of about a 3" blade and 4" handle.

It's so sharp, in either size, that if you know how to use it, it can be as effective as any small knife. It isn't a fighting bowie or a short sword. But it won't fold up on you.

Just checked my bank account and I can probably buy at least 1 and still make my Benz, yacht, and 7300 sq ft house payment. Now with the money problem out of the way, where, which one, design, small, large?

If I could choose, I'd pick a Large Regular Sebenza.

EDIT: BTW, are you serious about those payments!?

I had a $80 dollar dinner two days ago, and a $20 dollar dinner yesterday.... What I left in the toilet smelled about the same...

Not that any of that has anything to do with anything at all...LOL

But which one tasted better going in? ;)

My .02, unless you work outside and do appropriate outdoor sized tasks, the small sebenza is quite efficient for a whole lotta tasks and way easier to carry.
