Hello everyone. Looking for a few opinions. I am in the market for a chris reeve umnumzaan but need to get more info before I push the button. I really like the look of the old style pivot but wanted to know what all has been improved since then. I like the Ti chris cross pattern but am also fond of the newer Wilson Combat version. Couple questions for you all. 1st Question is.. What are the differences between the old pivot style umnumzaan and the current umnumzaan? 2nd question is..if you were in the market for a umnumzaan , which style would you buy and why?

I apologize in advance if I am posting this in the wrong section. If so,please let me know and move it to the proper section for me.
If this has been covered previously, please post a link for me to research.
I am new to this forum and am in need of some guidance. Thanks for your time, looking forward to hearing your comments & suggestions. -Mike

I personally strongly prefer the old 4-pin pivot and no overtravel stop, both mainly for aesthetics. Also, without the OTS it's easier to refinish/scotchbrite/etc.

Thank you for your post my friend. I prefer the looks of the older version way more than the new myself. Just wasn't sure if there were any changes/updates that made the newer version better than the 4hole pivot style. I honestly think I have my mind made up on a old style with x / cross style pattern Ti handle. Thanks again for your help.

Functionally it probably doesn't matter. Aesthetically it might to you.

In the end, it will likely depend on what is available when you go to buy one--the old style ones without the over travel stop and Idaho made stamp are getting harder to find.

I just messaged jrservices in regards to his post in today's for sale section but so far, no response. Not sure if it has sold but if it hasn't...I have Paypal ready.

Payment sent. Looks like I will have one of the old style chris reeve umnumzaa's in the mail on Monday! Pretty excited!! Thanks for all the input fellas!

Old is much more attractive IMO.

I agree! I really like the looks of the old style better. The one I purchased on here earlier ships out Monday! Kinda have that feeling you got as a kid waiting on Christmas :D I can't wait to get it in my hands!! Thanks everyone for all the help with my new purchase!

I guess Wilson Combat no longer has his version of the Umnumzaan, the 'StarTac', made for him by CRK. Oh well - I liked the pattern better 9/10 when I decided to commemorate my first SS retirement check by buying my first CR knife. Besides, the regular 'zaan was in short supply - and the WC variant was just a few denaros more and included shipping. My favorite CR knife!

A bit late, I suppose, but any Umnumzaan will be a great knife. Congratulations!

What makes you say that? I just checked Their website and the have the Startac in stock. Am I missing something??

That's what I was thinking...either way I'm glad I got mine. It's just the way I like it (old style pivot with LBS). I actually like having the LBS for some reason and I especially like the added touch of the CR logo on that side.

Love my Zaan with old pivot but with the lbs and no logo, I like it without the logo it looks cleaner then with it IMHO. I woul'nt mind owning the new version if I couldn't get the old. Enjoy the Zaan:thumbup:

Congrats, you'll love it.
For me it is that Christmas is here kinda of feeling too.

I prefer the old style pivot, not sure if it does anything better for the knife or not but I have to believe that it adds more rigidity to the knife since it's wider and connects to the handle on more facets, kinda like a vault door. That and aesthetics are why I bought two Startacs with the old pivot when they changed over to the new one. I prefer the look of no over travel stop but have grown fond of the one that I have with it so it doesn't really matter.

Enjoy that beauty, it's a very fine example of what a pocket knife is supposed to be.

I join the popular consensus stating I much prefer the old pivot as well. Did I say much? I meant to say much, much, much, much! :D It is funny how there were many complaints about the older pivot being too complex in the disassembly of the Umnum and before the new pivot came out, it seemed there were more negative comments than positive ones. I think it is a bit sad that the few (or perhaps many) who did complain influenced CRK enough to eventually change into the new-style pivot. Now, though it may be slightly easier to take apart, the fact remains that 2 different tools are still needed. This is only my humble opinion but the cost was too much. The old pivot is what lent much style and uniqueness to the Umnumzaan. I have seen only a few other custom knives with similar looking pivots (the elusive ZT 0777 comes to mind). Afterall, didn't the Umnumzaan win Overall Knife of the Year award in 2011? So the question is, why mess with near perfection?

My only hope is that CRK sees this thread and brings back the original Umnumzaan into production in all its glory.

I like the new pivot specifically because of the ability to use a hex tool. I like the looks of the old pivot a lot better though. If I was goi to buy one (hopefully soon) I would get a new pivot model.

Being a fan of the old pivot Umnum, I prefer the pre-updated version(s).
I agree, the old pivot was what made the Umnumzaan, to me, special compared to other knives and the Sebenza.
Not digging the change to the pivot, it's like taking the stripes and color off a tiger, it would just be another big cat

It's kind like growing a beard for 20 years, then all the sudden you shave it off and go into work the next day. People are gonna think you look funny or weird until they get use to it.
I think that's what happened to the Zann with the pivot and jimping change because a lot of guys didn't like it when it first came out.

Personally I like the old Zann with the big burly beard and the super cool squared off hair cut, instead of the new one that's clean shaven and has a funny hairdo. :D

^ Agreed, to me an Umnum just doesn't look right with the new Pivot. Do the new Umnum's and 25's share the same pivot? Looking at my 25 they look the same.
