chris reeve umnumzaan new or old pivot

I hope he reads this thread as well. Id love to see the old style pivot brought back or at least offered as an option. Can U all imagine the new 25 with a old style pivot?! Bet that thing would look sweet!
Good point on it being slightly harder to tear down than an allen. I am in luck though. I feel that I really scored when I bought mine yesterday. They are including the pivot take down tool along with the knife!
It was listed on here a few times. I can't believe it didn't sell before I saw it. Must have been meant to be! Thanks fellas for all the input & kind words. I have a feeling this is going to be my favorite knife to date and for some time to come!

Just got myself a mint zaan with the old pivot, no LBS and the Idaho Made stamp. And I see a B10 stamped on the inner side.

To disengage the lock bar, it was very stiff and difficult to do. Is this normal?
Also deployment requires a fair bit of force before it would budge. Any remedy to this?

But I do like the 4 pin pivots better than the new one.
Thanks.

Unless I missed something here, all of the "evidence" as to which pivot is "better" is cosmetic opinion.... Fair enough, not one bad word about either from a functional use point of view. I have both, and can't tell 1% difference in use. I did have to dull the top edge to avoid the possibility of a hassle here in Texas. Supposedly just got the right to carry an auto here, but I won't open that can........ Bart

Yeah I seem to be more fond of the old style pivot purely for cosmetic reasons :) I should be receiving it today in the mail. I couldn't pass up the sweet deal on it! No LBS either. It does have the Idaho made, but I don't care about that.

I prefer the look of the old pivot., but they function the same with the same inside diameter. I do like how the newest version is hex key serviceable.
Either way, I prefer the look of the star tac version much better! With with the new Idaho version you can hardly even see the stamp.

I dont care about the idaho stamp or the over travel stop. The umnum is already a busy knife to theres no point in trying to keep a clean look imo. Same reason I like the old pivot over the new. Might as well get a 25 if your going with the new pivot. I love my old pivot cause its what makes the umnumzaan, and I love my 21 cause its a sebenza. The new umnum and 25 both seem like half breeds to me. Both half umnum and half 25.

Congrats on scoring an old one! Hold on to it and never let go! Lol

Pretty sure they function exactly the same as the old pivot as well as the 25. Having had an umnumzaan for a year and a half and having never held any sebenza, I was very surprised when I finally did hold both. The 25 feels exactly like the umnumzaan. But then again, it should because its pretty much the same knife. When I picked up the 21 it was clear (and smooth) as glass which knife I was taking home. I really hope they dont stop making the 21.

I don't think the Umnumzaan and the 25 feel the same. I've been carrying the 25 for over a month now and I just got my Umnumzaan today. So I've been playing and handling with it. And it's just not my 25 I tell ya

I should correct myself. I think that even though deployment is different and the thumb moves in different directions, they pretty much feel exactly the same to me. They use the exact same pivot system and ceramic ball in the lockbar. I think the only difference in deployment is the direction your thumb moves and maybe any vibration in the blade or frame due to different shapes in the models. Dont get me wrong I love the 25 and would buy one over the new pivot umnumzaan, but its just not a 21.

Hmm... To each there own I guess. I don't think they feel the same in the hand. But I do agree about the new pivot = no bueno as far as looks go. Very cool blade shape though

Yes I looove the blade shape. I do love the hollow grinds more than the flat grind on the 25 but the jimping is much better on the 25, its pretty much perfect.

Old is much more attractive IMO.

What finish did you do on the blade?

The look of the new one is actually growing on me weirdly enough, i like the feeling of it towards the pivot in the hand, feels more spacious. I don't own own just handled one.

Payment sent. Looks like I will have one of the old style chris reeve umnumzaa's in the mail on Monday! Pretty excited!! Thanks for all the input fellas!
I just had to go back and read about my all time favourite knive, the OLD Type Umnumzaan by Chris Reeve. I had it, but I gave it away to my childhood friend that got me into knives. Hadn't seen him for years. Just stepped up on his door, knocked on, he came out and I said, ", Here's something for you to remember about when me and you was young and fall into an interest that has followed me since you showed me and learned me". He knew a lot to be only 13-14 years. "Open it when I'm gone". This is many years ago now, and I met him ones, and he always have it with him. It's in his car when driving. I can't say I regret, it was a token of respect and I would do it again. I've read that you should always give the best of yourself, the thing you appreciate the most, so I did, and I felt so good after. I had many knives, but I chooses the one I wanted most myself. It's a good practice. Anyway, now these are hard to get hold of, and I truly want one so much. I had the one with the cross lines on the handles and I also got the leather sheath, it all was there.
I never owned a Sebenza, and I wonder if I should go for the Den. 31 or the Inkosi? Should I go for the small or large version. And if one day both, what would be best for the small version and what would be best for the large? I know, not an easy task, but would like to hear what you and others think. If I truly think of it, a great knife like the Seb.31 and Inkosi in small version would be great. I don't think I need a larger knife for city, desk, outdoor at home, just walking around situation. And I'm sure they can protect me if it should come to that. When you pull up a knife, people turns, even if both have, thank God. And in my 47 years, I never seen need for that. I rather take a beating myself than killing or damaging a person for life with a knife. So, the Inkosi is heavier build, thicker blade, more a hard worker. Open cans with and so. The Seb.31 is maybe a better slicer, cutting cardboard, open letters and still tough. Also, should I have inlays? When I think of it, I like it without. It's sleeker and you feel the nice treated Titanium. And if you have large hands(I have medium, square hands), you can always use the lanyard for grip as well.
It's an old post this, so it will be interesting to see if there will be some feedback.
Take care all of you. Best regards from Norway, Thomas.

Just get another Umnumzaan... If you loved it and miss it, go for it, get another one!

Aesthetics go to the old style
Function goes to the new as you do not need a special tool for maintenance.
