The asare wood is really cool. It has a color similar to neem wood, but a heavier, thicker darker grain. I have it on a deradune with chiruwa handle. You will love it.

I think the sticky posting you're referring to is dated in 2011. A month or two ago it was announced here on the forum that there would be no special orders for a while because of the shop moving. The kamis have to get caught up with orders from the HI web site.

Having said that, a bilton with a horn handle is not a custom order. The HI web site only shows a subset of models and handle types, but DOTDs on this forum often have alternative models or standard models with different handle materials. Horn handles are quite common, actually, on most models.

Typically a special/custom order is a knife made at an individual's request with a very specific set of requirements: model, size, weight, handle type, etc. Sometimes they are unique knives, even brand new designs, and sometimes a standard model made to fit the exact wishes of the person putting in the order.

Of course you might have to wait a long time for a special order, and pay more, especially if it is a unique design. Some special order knives made in the past have proved quite popular and have been added to the HI "menu," but even so they don't always show up at the HI web site.

Tks for the info Ted. It's the first time I own such handle . Eager to c the physical product.
