Recommendation? Christmas help with a Survival knife

Cold steel srk is a good option.

Les Stroud (survivorman) carries the srk. If that isn't a stellar mark of endorsement, I dont know what is

Well he also gets paid to carry the cheap Camillus crap that you can get from Walmart.

Oh does he? Well thats unfortunate...

I read some interview years ago where he talked about carrying either the srk, or a buck 119 with the tip ground to his liking

That's not it (although those minis are fun). The Varusteleka store, that designs and sell the Terava knives, have a video on their Facebook site of a recent visit to the Laurin Metalli factory where all their knives are made, and it showed a prototype of a one-handed version of the big Skrama they were experimenting with. The blade looked about 8 inches long, two inches shorter than the big one, which would make the knife a modern/skrama-ish version of a leuku. Still very early stage, it looked like they had cut up one of the long handles to take out the 'bump' in the middle and glued it back together again to put it on a prototype blade...
Should be a very handy, super strong multifunctional chopper/bush knife that would make a nice combo with one of the minis. I'd start leaving hints about anniversary/Christmas presents for late 2020... ;-)

Do you have a link for the new prototype?

It’s kinda sad that he would sell out like that.

Is there a self-help group for fans of these knives? I am not sure that I see the point of an 8” Skrama blade with a short handle, but I can feel the pull nevertheless. I am already resisting the temptation to add a 140mm puukko to my 110, and to get both flavors of mini. I am also trying really hard not to spend twenty bucks for a bare tang Mini Skrama sheath, even if nobody has made fun of the one I made.

It took some time to find it again. It was actually a photo album on their FB site, dating 22 November.

Not sure if that long link works. Otherwise, find the Varusteleka main page at varusteleka.com, scroll down to find the link to their FB page and there, scroll down to the photoset of 22 November 2019. That's how I accidentally ran in to this. Other prototypes/experiments visible as well (full-width tang blanks for various models...). One also gets an impression of how to mass-produce blades.
Maybe we'd better put this in a new thread for Terävä fans...

UPDATE: seems to work.
