With Santa making the final adjustments to his sleigh ready for the big day I figured we should have a Christmas thread !

Things to discuss:

Outdoor related uses for Christmas recycling.

Trips or hikes planned over Christmas.

What types of Christmas tree ya have ( No W&SS members should have an artificial one !:p).

And obviously what outdoor items is Santa bringing ya ?

I'll start off with the recycling part;

I heard that all the after party beer caps can be nailed upside down to a section of board ( Plywood etc ) to make a great hiking boot scraper to rid ya soles of mud before entering the house.

The fancy coloured cords on bottle bags etc make great high vis lanyards so ya don't lose ya knives etc !

Tins, tins and more tins.....Just the obvious here, small tins are great for PSK kits, I keep fatwood in the empty cookie tins ( Big dissapointment for visitors when they pull some out to dunk in their tea !:D)

I've got a ZT 0121 and a Mad Bomber hat coming for me.

Girlfriend already snagged the cookie tin for jewelry.

Don't have room for a tree. Headin to family for xmas day.

I'd rather just run off into the woods, and might.

I have to work Christmas day 14:00-22:30:( but will definitely head out for a hike on Boxing day !

little trip to arkansas to see aging relatives
(300+acres of family owned-since before the civil war-to stomp around on)
side trip to ponca area for some hiking/camping along the buffalo
could be 10 degrees could be 60
looking like somewhere in between on long range forecasts....we shall see
will bring appropriate gear for whatever the weather provides
tho air travel in winter provides its own challenges with the extra clothing gear etc
fortunately i have a cousin who lets me ship stuff ahead of time
and will post back upon leaving
and has great camping equip so i dont have to deal with some of that

Sounds like a great trip, don't forget to take some pics !;)

Trips or hikes planned over Christmas.--GOING BACK TO WACO TO VISIT THE IN LAWS
WILL TAKE KNIVES TO TEST THERE

MY WIFE LOVES TO SAVE THE TINS AS WELL--GREAT FOR STORAGE

GOOD POST PIT

I like the recycle idea:thumbup: I grew up making a day trip to the Cascades to search and select our Christmas tree...since we haven't had a year to go look where we've lived, we broke down and picked up an artificial one...it was easier on my wife when I was deployed:o

Well, my RMJ Shrike came early and I don't expect my Diving Sparrow Parang to arrive in time (I'll keep my fingers crossed)...my B-Day is the January 1st, so I've got some wiggle room:D

I think I'm going to get my son a CS Trailsman hawk and/or a Condor Bush Cutlass...what 11 year old boy doesn't want a long, sharpened piece of steel?:D

ROCK6

I dont know..I am thinking about harvesting my own tree this year..something like charlie brown might have:D
Xmas is gonna be tough this year..my girls car just took the dump..and we are working hard to stay afloat this year...most of the year, my OT was held back...
I am most likely gonna sell my knife collection to fund the car and Xmas...what can you do, but just thank everyone in charge for doing such a wonderful job, and for working JUST as hard as I do.
Sorry to rain on the Xmas thread...but I am in a bitter mood..the car took the dump this morning.:thumbdn:
Not to mention, I have been putting off repair on the Jeep, waiting for some extra funds..that never appear.
Anyway...if I do sell MOST of my gear..I will keep only the best for me..which isnt a big deal really...I dont need most that I have, and only use the ones I will keep anyways..so no big loss.
Maybe I need to work another 50 hrs a week at night, and make some blades;)

Seriously, 2 more years..and I am retiring and making some blades...thats the plan anyways...we shall see.

Well, I have an artificial tree, as I like the way the white trees like more. As far as presents.. the Hest Folder is the only thing I know I am getting. My sister just bought me Thrunite Catapult V2, so I guess that counts. Also know that I will be getting other gear, but not sure what it will be. As far as trips, Christmas time is usually just on-the-fly.

We still have one of those shiny aluminum trees with the rotating multicolored light. Talk about recycling...we have been re-cycling this "tree" for decades!

We plan on skiing Christmas Day up in Lake Tahoe. I'm out of work so no presents this year, unfortunately, but it's OK...the spirit is still there and we plan on having a good couple of days in the snow.

haha those things are dangerous we have one of those that my dad had when he was a kid and just after thanksgiving when we pluged in the light for the first time this year it caught fire. that was fun:rolleyes:

We don't have much of a Christmas between the adults, but focus on the kids. The small gifts, I choose, or even buy myself, and I get the gift and cash to pay for it. My parents might get me a Kindle, though. I don't have a tree. I go wherever family is. Some nice sweatpants, a pair of TNF Rainier shorts like ones I hike and climb in, and a gift certificate to AL Outdoors store are all Santa is bringing that I know of.
I bought myself some stuff noone's paying for, so guess Christmas is coming early for me.
Got 3 kydex sheaths from Kiah on the way, bought 10pr of Smartwool socks (at 70% off, half for me:)), and some stuff from Supply Captain.
Should have a Camelbak Storm and reversible pack cover, and two BDS Tactical pouches in the next week.
It's a foliage green Christmas. Guess as long as my pack's happy, I'm happy!

I'm getting a Cold Steel American Lawman and a 32G USB Flash Drive, gift cards etc this year.
I did order a Condor Golok recently and will probably order a couple compression bags from MEC soon which will be my gift to myself!
Recently lucked into a good backpack at a thrift store so i won't need to buy that Snugpac i was thinking of buying.
Trying to keep it simple really. I'm giving mostly books and practical things like lights etc. Money is tighter than normal due to some recent dentist bills.
But knifewise i overindulged this past 6 months so i can't complain!
Love the smell of a real tree but have been using an artificial tree for years, will probably go cut a few boughs to get that real tree smell.
Don't have the heart to cut down anymore trees right now as the recent hurricane Igor was very damaging to the local tree population.
Recently got one of those Mora spoon carving/hook knives, i have some good hardwood here so i might try to carve a bowl/spoon/mug or two for Christmas.
Also recently bought a few wood checkering tools so thats another option.
This year i went 6 months without using credit cards, i'm thinking for the upcoming year i'll try and do a full year without CC's. Trying to simplify/streamline things overall will be my theme for the coming year!

family/friends here dont do the gift exchange thing
unless we make it ourselves

but i did order a esee 5 for my pal, vic
he's a great dude and dear friend
has helped me(and others) thru many scraps
did the esee5 passaround over the summer.
vic was on tht camping trip and he fell in love with that knife
he's not the sorta guy to spend $ on himself, so i just had to get that knife for him.
really loved that knife myself. it certainly is no edc as far as im concerned. but a great knife for anything more than a day hike.
one of these days i'll pick one up for myself. but right now can afford only one. so this ones for vic!

For a tree - we'll probably get what ever the kids pick out when we go to cut one this weekend. Usually end up with a spruce.
For outdoor activities - sliding and snowshoeing.
Recycling - wrapping paper gets used as "fire starter" for the wood stove.
Outdoor gear - I ordered a jacket for myself:) They were on sale last week at Cabelas. Also I'll be getting a knife from another custom maker since I'm in the KITH in the makers section.

Outdoor related uses for Christmas recycling.
Re-use zip ties, save tins and burn the paper!

Trips or hikes planned over Christmas.
Probably a few walks through the woods, hoping for snow! I may bring the air rifle out too. Last year i brought my new JK fixed blade out and had some fun on some downed trees.

Artificial :-\. But to my defense, i prefer blue spruce, but my gramma has a small table tree she puts out for christmas.

And obviously what outdoor items is Santa bringing ya ?
A leatherman surge, bit kit, pocket clip and bit extender. From anyone else, i don't know. My dad mentioned a cabelas gift card.

Probably a dumb question Bruce but what does KITH mean ?

KITH - Knife In The Hat. Apparently there was an old tradition where guys would all put there pocket knife into a hat and then each person would draw one out and you ended up with a "new to you" knife. In the Christmas KITH each person makes a knife - then there is a draw for who you send your knife too. The recipient doesn't know who's knife he is getting until it shows up in the mail.

Here is a link to pics of the knives that have been made for this year's KITH:
