I'm anticipating a busy week around Christmas. My girlfriend and I will be up on Blue Mountain to celebrate with my folks and enjoy the snowshoeing. It's pretty awesome up there right now. Here's a shot from the front porch this morning!
Per tradition, this trip will involve me wandering out into the back woods with a tomahawk and a length of rope, and returning some time later with a tree to decorate, in a sort of Charlie Brown-meets-Last of the Mohicans display of festive W&SS fun.
After spending the 24th with my family, we're driving to Gatineau to celebrate with her family. The plan is for this to involve snowshoeing. A number of those in attendance are from Central and South America, and are experiencing their first Canadian winter. So I have volunteered myself to coordinate a snowshoe hike and winter campfire with hot beverage production. Should be interesting.
I like the idea of thinking about recycling options. This year, we're doing small, edible / drinkable gifts only, so there probably won't be much left over. But I do intend to keep an eye out for a container that could be used to store tinder. Nut shells (often abundant during the holidays) can be collected and ground up to mix with other tinder. They seem to burn pretty well. Half-burned candles can be collected and melted down in a double-boiler - there are plenty of applications for wax.
I'm not really anticipating any W&SS-related gifts. I went out and purchased a nice new Sevens Quark flashlight for myself last month. Can't wait to see how it does during late-night snowshoeing expeditions.
Happy winter. May it be cold, snowy, and enjoyable!
Best,
- Mike
