Christmas with family - "why do you always carry knives?"

My Christmas went the same way. Sat in my chair using my knife to cut all the boxes zip ties cut tape etc. Used the mora to cut the beef tenderloins. But the highlight was the look on my in-laws faces seeing the gifts I gave my kids. They’re the very liberal participation trophy anti weapons type. Got my Oldest 2 sons each benchmade and spyderco knives. The automatic dpms AR style BB gun along with the classic red Ryder BB gun for the 8 year old son. And a mossberg 500 shotgun for the oldest son. I can only imagine the words that were said when I went outside to shoot with the boys. Lol

I also forgot that I had a Mora and also a fillet knife in the car, that I could have used for the tenderloin.... But it was interesting to see how the little Salt 2 fared.

It impressed even me. And no worries about corrosion.

I have few answers to that question.

1. To cut.
2. So I don't have to rip things, or use my teeth to open something.
3. Because I'm not superhuman and I can't rip things like zip ties with my bare hands.
4. Why wouldn't I?

Some of the people feel dumb after asking.
I used my EDC knife to split my meal with a coworker the other day and I got the same question.
I just said "It's useful, like you just seen right now."

Christmas notwithstanding, I find it rather odd that people in the U.S. get squeamish around pocket knives and associate them with weapons, when in the same pocket you can carry a real weapon and technically can be a far "scarier" threat.

In Canada we are afraid of everything, real or perceived.

edit: definitely an issue with the forum causing double posts.

The setting: Christmas day - large family gathering.

A big meal, followed by lots of presents to open.

My ol' man was having difficulty carving the roast that my sister made with her crappy, dull kitchen knives.

My Spyderco Salt 2 cut through it with ease! A 3" blade length!

After dinner:
Every other gift ppl were coming to me with a package that needed tape sliced, a ribbon cut or some other use of the little 1.5" sheepsfoot blade of my Alox Victorinox Electrician to get at their gift haul.

During that, I heard 3x, "Why do you always carry knives on you??"

I was like: "Have you noticed how many times I bailed ppl out today and how often it came in handy?!?!"

:confused::rolleyes::cool:

And thank you for making me "need" another SAK.. Never knew there was one with a small sheepsfoot, that's just pure genious!!

A red one is on order!

:D

My answer is usually “for cutting things”.
I had courthouse detail years ago and one of the women that worked in one of the offices just could not get over the fact that I carried a knife. The fact that I was a large, fully uniformed, armed deputy was OK. Glock, ammo, OC, baton, etc all made sense to her. Why I had a Delica in my pocket did not.
I asked her about why she had scissors at her desk. She said for cutting things open. I explained that scissors were actually 2 knives hinged together. She still did not understand why I needed to carry a knife.

I simply say - RULE # 9 - and to the quizzical look I say - do the google.
Of course the next question could be - "why are you such a wise ass"
but they already know the answer so we are saved a drawn out discussion. :D

Last week at work someone asked me why I carry so many knives o, to which I answered that what they were seeing was in fact one belt knife a multi tool and a pouch containing my marker and a couple tools.
What I didn't tell them was that they weren't technically wrong because there were actually others he couldn't see in my pockets :D
I've been asked why I carry so many often enough, but can't really recall ever being asked why I carry a knife. ( Off work it's usually no more than two plus a small multi tool )
Besides my belt knife if they can see it I'm using it and I suppose that probably answers it if they're wondering, or they're just common enough in my rural area that nobody questions it.

I usually get that question whenever I pull out my multitool, since most people at work know about my regular knife. I bust the multitool out for most of my regular cutting tasks and it's pretty hidden on my belt sheath.

But it generally stops there. I live in the south so it's not much of a problem. Now explaining to the so called country folk/rednecks that there is no "Bigger than your Palm" rule is another story. Tennessee hasn't had amy restrictive knife laws since 2014.

I almost forgot about Christmas .
For some Reason I decided to just tear the first gift open, but didn't realize there was so much tape and it wasn't long before I heard " just cut it already ". :D

BTW I gifted 3 Vic classics and all were torn open, neither my mom my grandmother or my dad think they need a knife on them at home.
