My wife and I drove up to the newly opened Bass Pro shop just north of Calgary today for a look-see, along with several thousand other Calgarians taking advantage of the spring weather. My wife headed to the clothing section, while I naturally made a bee-line to the cutlery counter. There were a couple of guys wearing Buck shirts at the Buck display at one end of the knife counter, and I was highly impressed by their in-depth knowledge of steels, models, and Buck history. "Wow! Bass Pro is doing a heck of a job educating their staff," I thought, inasmuch usually the staff at the knife counter can't tell you which is the sharp and pointy end. I was having a very pleasant discussion with one of these congenial gentlemen, when I noticed his name tag: C.J. Buck! His Dad, I think it was, sent me a Kraton-handled 619 (I think that's the one) which I reviewed for an outdoors magazine about 20 years ago. I used that knife to field dress a moose, and was highly impressed by it. I was looking for a 110 with the S30V blade, but Chuck explained that Buck only makes that one for Cabellas. Chuck then showed me a beauty of a 110 in CPM 154 with the titanium/aluminum coating, a model which they make for Bass Pro (I nearly succumbed). The 110 in 420HC, the one I keep coming back to, which I happened to have on my belt, now has Chuck's autograph engraved on the blade. I'm going to have to think seriously about a visit to the Custom Shop.
