For those that have smoked both who prefers one to the other and why?

Wondering about it. Seems like Pipes might be cheaper to smoke even though the nitial outlay of a pipe or two is more.

I meant OBVIOUSLY...for the smarty's inthe group

nothing like smoking a pipe on the porch and watching the sun set. reminds me of my dad and grandpa

It depends. If you really get into pipe smoking and start buying hand carved customs, you might start thinking $1000 for a pipe is reasonable. Or you might be perfectly happy with a $100 Peterson. If you do smoke a lot, you'll need several pipes to rotate so that the bowls can adequately dry between smokes.

I still have quite a few pipes but don't seem to smoke them as much since my son was born. Still, once in a blue moon, I'll load up a bowl and smoke it with a nice tumbler of whiskey.

As for preferences, I like the pipe. Something about the act of loading the bowl, firing the tobacco, and then minding the bowl as you smoke. Just a very tangible act that can bring a lot of pleasure.

I looked, but I don't have many pictures of my pipes. Here's a W.O. Larsen (Danish pipe) that I like a lot. Probably my favorite to smoke.

Though the rubber mouthpieces sort of destroy the line of the pipe, they do protect the pipe, ease some of the pressure on your teeth, and give you a better grip on the pipe.

Also, here's a pipe tamper that I made from a deer antler and a .50 caliber brass cleaning jag.

Ground the face of the jag flat and then drilled and tapped the antler to accept the jag's threads.

I like cigars myself. I use for leisure plus mosquito repellant - just smoke one with a brimmed hat and it keeps the critters away. We have the fortunate option of getting cubans here - but mostly I can't afford the good ones. I usually get the smaller ones from Nicaragua. Cigars and single malt scotch go very well together...

Pipes are great, I have at least 30 , most are custom. you can smoke many different tobacco's depending on your mood & taste, plus you get to buy really cool pipes!:D

very cool. I smoked my first pipe this weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not sure that I prefer it to cigars yet, but it is definitely cheaper, but it is more work to maintain whereas a cigar is easy and you can do othe stuff while smoking a cigar. A big plus is the fact that the wife likes the smell of a pipe but does not like Cigar smell.

To me even a $100 pipe is expensive right now.

Here's two sites where you can find some relatively inexpensive pipes. Both places also buy estate pipes and restore them, so at times, you can find a high quality pipe at a much reduced price. Both places will treat you right. Guy and Jackie at Affordable Pipes also have a good selection of tinned tobaccos.

Cobalt, try several different types of tobacco, to see what types & flavors you like, different tobacco's burn different. some tobacco you only have to light once!

Hey, Cobalt, I would be glad to help you out with A nice custom pipe, for A little something from your INFI collection!:D:D

I have no patience for a pipe. None. Zip. HAve tried many many times. Have had very expensive pipes, cheap pipes, good tobacco, cheap tobacco, etc., I just stink at it.

And a lot of the pipe tobacco I liked smoking stunk to high heaven to everyone else. Like burnt butthair. Bleech!

FWIW, Cherry Cavendish is NOT pipe tobacco but glorified candy. Same with virtually all flavored tobacco. A good english or Virginian blend is far more complex and tasty. . . but the better the flavor for you, the more butthair it smells to everyone else. :(

Gimme a cigar. I can read a book or something while smoking a cigar. I'm a simple guy. I like a simple solution. In the long run, the pipe will be cheaper, but I said that about reloading too. SUUUURE. That was cheaper. LOL

Wow this has been a great thread. I have a Hooka and really like that (tobaco only....serious) and I have always wanted to try a pipe. i do like cigars. I guess I could give a cheap one a try and see how it goes. Thanks for starting this thread Cobalt and all the posts guys.

I smoke both. Really enjoy my stogies better. For pipe 'baccy I really like Christmas Cheer. It can be found at a few places with 6 or even 8 years on it. Really makes a difference in the flavor. Haddo's Delight is another great one. I just don't like the hassle of carrying a pipe, tamper, tobacco pouch, and lighter.

Some of my favorite legal cigars are Aston VSG, Padron Anniversary Maduro, Fuente Hemingway, most any La Gloria Cubana.

When I can get them Cuban Montecristo #2 rule.

Oh, and you think Busse knives are addictive...

...wait till you start looking for the perfect pipe tool or pipe knife. :D

If I still smoked a pipe with any frequency, I'd probably get a Laguiole pipe knife.

I bought a pipe earlier this year... it is definately something to tinker with... :) I bought a cheap corn cob pipe at the reccomendation of the Tobacconist, he gave me a sample of pipe tobacco to see how I like it... Cavendish, I think? It was good if I could keep it lit... the packing, charring, puffing is a skill in itself...

I enjoy it - but find it too much work to smoke at the office, but just right on a spring day...

I made a tamper out of a .308 case - funny how like minds think alike! :D

I don't take it to the office any more, after my boss told me, "My Dad told me never to hire a man who smokes a pipe - he's either smoking it - or F'in with it!" :D

I prefer a cigar for a smoke and walk, or doing yard-work or something - definately need 2+hands when I smoke a pipe, but I'm still learning... :D

Pipe smoking is by far more enjoyable.

THAT said, NOTHING is more gangster than smoking a Cohiba as you step out of your Monte Carlo with a .45 in your waist band. lol

Have never tried a pipe, but would. As a few of you have mentioned, seems like a good way to force yourself to sit still and enjoy some time for reflection. (Like, where am I gettin another three hundred bucks for the next knife I need.) At work cigars are by far the favorite, but think I would try the pipe first.

For now I think I'll stick with the occasional chaw of tobaccy, Durango for me. Not quite as refined and does not provide the pleasant aroma, but, enjoyable none the less. Have tried the snuff but cant seem to get it right. Not to hijack the thread but since we're talking tobacco, curious of other favorite chew tobacco brands.

X-mas Cheer was some great baccy. And one of the singed-butthair-smelling varieties. Haddo's was better smelling but was too subtle for me to get. There was a guy on alt.smokers.pipes that had it CONSTANTLY in his pipes. He got that breathing-method down to the point where he could go to Walmart with it lit and no one would notice. LOL
