Cigar vs. Pipe : OT Obviously

I have smoked pipes off and on for years. I inherited a few from my dad and an old gentleman who was a regular at our restaurant gave me all of his (he switched to cigars exclusively). I don't smoke them much these days. Too much work, seeing how I like to smoke while doing yard work and as others have said, pipes are for less active times. For smoking I much prefer cigars. I like maduros in the 5"X50 area. Now since HDBeav brought up chaw, that is one bad habit I must admit to loving. I mostly chew Red Man Golden Blend. There is one sweet sticky mess in a slick black bag called Lancaster. When I can find it and it is fresh, nothing can beat that black gold. I have cut way back on the chaw and smoking. My gums get ton up pretty easy these days. At the height of my chewing "career" I would go through 3-4 bags of leaf and at least as many cans of snuff (Skoal fine cut wintergreen or long cut depending on my feel for the day. I used to buy it by the log for my dad for the holidays.

Hey I got numb tongue, was the pipe to hot or what? Otherwise all went well. I kept it lit for quite sometime.

Tongue bite...

Tongue bite is a common problem for the new pipe smoker. Your tongue and palate need to acclimate to the pH levels in the tobacco smoke; tobacco moisture or dryness are also heavily contributing factors. Don’t get discouraged and give up; it will be worth it in the end. If tongue bite continues for over a week, try experimenting with different tobaccos, moisture levels and/or varying the density of the pack Your body chemistry and packing pressure greatly affect your smoking comfort. Ask your tobacconist for guidance on these issues.

"Tongue bite," an intense burning sensation of the tongue,
is an unpleasant side effect often experienced by the new pipe
smoker (it is also experienced by non-newbies who take up the pipe
again after a period of abstinence). While irritating, it will
usually go away after a week or so of smoking. If you experience
this problem for an extended period, then you may be smoking a
tobacco that's too moist, you may have failed to pack the bowl
properly, or you're smoking too fast.

thanks, I am most likely smoking too fast. It was not terrible and it was only after 3 bowls in a row.

I love tobacco. Cigars are the best for tobacco lovers cause you can inhale them. Inhaling pipe tobacco is not so nice. I used to smoke Camel nonfilters till my lungs made me stop. I smoked cigars for years. I love inhaling a good cigar but they are too expensive. Now I smoke cigarette tobacco in a pipe. Two or three bowls a day does the trick. Mmmmmm nicotine. Been smoking for 40 years but now I am considering giving it up. Health is better than smoke.

INHALING ?? Man! the fact your still kicken is amazing. I once read that inhaling one entire churchil size cigar was like smoking 52 cigarettes.

Actually I find a good cigar to be milder than the virginia tobacco and additives you find in many cigarettes. I used to smoke royal jamaica. They were quite good, but as I say far more expensive than cigs. Now I find that two or three small pipes of blonde virginia cigarette tobacco is quite enough. It's funny but my lung capacity has always been better than most nonsmokers. I guess it's cause I exercised my alveoli with all those camels.

i smoke pipes and cigars at least one of either each day in moderation. both are nice but pipes will make you live about 24 years longer than a none smoker.....

You are correct Skunk. But it depends what you're smokin. Put that in your pipe :)

I found PH to be a non-issue in tongue bite. It then boiled down to smoking too fast (you sip like you wanted a little splash of a drink out of a straw, no more) or wet tobacco. Flavored tobaccos tend to be fairly wet and difficult to dry b/c they often have Propolyne Glycol (sp) in it to maintain humidity.

Best thing was to let some tobacco dry for a day or so outside the tin/bag/whatever. I knew guys on alt.smokers.pipes that had 30 pipes. 4 per day, 7 days. They'd pack all of em on Sunday and smoke them throughout the week. Drier ones first, then the wetter blends later. I never had the time, money, or planning to smoke 30 pipes.

That is dedicated pipe smokers boy!

I've been a cigarette smoker for almost 45 years. Camel unfiltered, then filtered, then light. Smoke cigars and pipes both occassionally. Wake up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and cough up phlegm for 30 minutes or so. Cough is getting to me, so am trying something called snus. Swedish invention. Basically snuff in tea bag like paper pouches. Put them under your top lip. Not too bad. Don't have to spit very often. Comes in different flavors. Got to cut those damn cigs out.

Skoal has had that for years, bandits. Those were another occassional companion for me. There were some interesting little bits I found at the local tobacconists, Oliver Twists I think or some such. They came in a little plastic box like asprin used to. Best I could tell it was tightly rolled tobbaco leaf, flavored and cut into small nibs. Pop it between teeth and gum and away you go. I never spit with them.

WOW:eek::eek:

You be da'man!!!!

That's alot og 'baccy in a day.

I chew Skoal 4 times a day at work. Have a cigar bout every other night, maybe 3 to 7 on Saturdays. Years ago I chewed leaf tobacco, but reserve that now for fishing with my father-in-law.

Most of my pipes are Petersons, but they are all mostly sitting idle while the cigar humidors are kept pretty busy.

If it's a Churchill size, it's probably more like 100 cigarettes. That man never did anything in 'half measures.'
